There is also one more different photo certs Identified.
It has the MM scale on the back and would fit into the list in 1984 and be add as a type 4.1.
so it would be a type 4 with a MM scale added on the reverse. Looks like the scale from the type 5.
So this one make a totle of 12 different certs, 11 are listed in the article, with the type 3 has a grade and no grade and now the new type 4.1 addition.

This thread was started on March 1, 2012, and I picked that date since it was the day grading started on March 1, 1979. And the first graded had helped me alot with this project. Incase you don't know his name he is a active member ATS on PCGS forum and I have a few quotes from him on the process of the grading room at ANACS.

 

I just bought this and was wondering if the holder is also original?

Anyway, I was wondering if you had any other research on ANACS. I really like the small white holders and want to know more about time frames and evolution of the company.

Any advice?

 

I was watching that dime you bought there. I did not bid on it but I wanted to.
After I sent out this article it was about one year before I was able to buy a photo cert, it took that long before people started to forget about them and I could pay a going price for the coin.
The holder is after market but I like them. I have a old ad that has them for sale in the ANA paper
It is called "Report on ANACS Coins" June 1983Vol 1 number 4

I did send it out to some different pubs. But not being a journalist that did not work out, I made some errors in that area.
So I just like receiving nice comments about it.
Sent it to the ANA, Coin World and QD Bowers and they all like it.

I don't know the time frame for when the different holders came to the market other the the first one since the new owner changed the slab.

but the time line of the company is as follows:
1972- June 1990 Part of the ANA
June 1990 thru Mar 2005 Amos Press, Dublin, Ohio
Mar 2005 thru Dec 21, 2007 Anderson Press, Austine Texas
Dec 21, 2007 thru Present Driving Force LLC of Colorado, In Englewood, Colorado bought by James Taylor.

I believe that the Small White Holders stopped with they purchase of ANACS by Anderson Press, and the new blue holder appeared. I like those but they fell apart when you dropped them I heard, I never dropped one.

The info was really easy to find out there. I just put the pictures in a order for all to see.

 

For those following this who want to see what the ANACS 4.1 looks like




For some usage dates on ANACS 4, 4.1, and 5:

The earliest ANACS 4 I have seen is 9/28/1981 and the latest is 11/1/1982
The earliest, and only, ANACS 4.1 I have seen is dated 12/3/1982 (This was only discovered in April of 2013.)
The earliest ANACS 5 I have seen is dated 7/6/1983 and the latest is 9/2/83 or 10/31/83 on a transfer certificate.

Also of interest, although ANACS started operations in early 1972, I have not seen any certificates dated before 7/9/75. That is almost three years of operation with no known certificates! Surely some earlier ones have to be out there.

The small white holders continued after the sale of ANACS to Anderson Press but were only used for problem coins. They continued until I believe May 2007 and come in three different varieties. They were discontinued in response to the counterfeit small size problem coin holders that first turned up in March of 2007. After May both problem and problem free coins were put in the blue label holders.

The Blue label holders first appeared in Feb 2005. These were the rounded bottom slabs. (These come in at least three varieties.) They lasted until Sept 2007 when the square bottom blue label slabs were introduced. After the sale of ANACS to Driving Force the blue label slabs continued, until Aug 2008 when the current yellow label slabs were released.

I thought I would add my Photo cert of the type 4.1 for your records.
I purchased it Feb 2012 but never thought to look at the reverse until you mentioned it, and a picture of it never made it into my article.

It has the same date as the last type 4 you mentioned in your post. 11-1-82
We have the last dated cert for the type 4 and the first dated cert for the type 4.1, next I would like to see the serial numbers and see how close there are.

I don't have the serial number for the 11/1/82 type 4 as I do not own it, I merely noted the date when I saw it as being later than my previously latest type 4. I didn't record the serial number.

Thanks for the later dated type 5, I've updated my notes. It is especially interesting since the earliest type 6 I've seen was dated 10/4/83 so we have almost a three month overlap on these two types. (Once again I don't have the serial number on the 10/4/83 type 6)
