I hear a lot of complaints about eBay here but I have sold items with no problems. Furthermore when I purchased items that were snad I got a full refund EVERY TIME. EVERY TIME. Lol even that unsearched roll I told you guys about I got a $300 partial refund from the guy. Then eBay told the guy to refund the rest. The guy didn't and I got the full 1k so I got 2 cleaned unc details ihc's from inside the roll and $300 extra. How about that for an unsearched roll.

eBay is great it is the worlds largest coin store. You can use their records as a great reference for coin values. I get hundreds of free dollars every 3 months. Most sellers have good pics and if there is a problem there is never a problem. You always get your money back. For the last few years I have bought coins on eBay if I spend some time hunting I can then sell them at the Vegas shows for a 5-10% profit. Not that I make much money but the fact it is possible shows that there are good deals out there.

Add bidnapper into the equation and it becomes easy and fun. I have not bought a coin at a show for years as I find them way overpriced. But every night as my hobby I just spend 30 min looking eBay over and see what there is to find.

I love eBay! You should too!

As always my coin for the thread. Just to be awesome I will disclose I actually bought this one from heritage lol.

eBay is a pretty good place to buy coins from. Selling not as much.
There definitely are deals out there as well, but you have to sift through all the crap, which consists of at least 90% of the coins on eBay.

If you've carefully researched your area of interest, there's little danger of being swindled, especially with the mandatory return policies. I've collected a number of excellent coins at bargain prices on eBay, and I'll continue to do so as long as the hunting is good.

As far as selling goes, well...you need good business acumen to make a profit anywhere. Every merchant has overhead, and that has to be calculated into your asking prices, and you've got to be stubborn about not selling for a loss. I made a few hundred profit recently, but I'm not selling anymore. I discovered it wasn't my interest. For one thing, it was a pain in the ass to constantly monitor my sales, package things up, drive them to the post office, etc. And for another, I didn't like parting with my coins.

I don't have any issues with ebay, either. I've had decent luck buying and selling. Even better, I have developed a few valuable contacts based on those transactions, which has been most valuable of all.
Ebay is bound to get its fair share of negative comments just as any other leader of a particular field (Wal-mart, Costco, Starbucks, etc.). Nothings perfect, but as a whole, I appreciate that ebay exists and will continue to utilize it often.

I know ancients aren't most collectors' cup of tea, but if we're celebrating eBay victories in this thread, I've had an exceedingly good run this month. Here's a composite of 8 coins that I've collected over the last two weeks: 6 Roman bronzes, one silver denarius, one silver Jital of the Nezak Huns. Total cost, approximately $200, all won through auctions with low starting bids and no reserve. This set would easily have run $400 to $500 at vcoins or numismall...

I like that I always have an "out" if I need it (sell the coin on ebay) I'm happy you haven't had any issues but the odds will catch up with you and you'll get that difficult situation at some point. Letting complete strangers know where I live has always been a concern as well - PO box or not.

Lastly, as mentioned, you have to sift through the junk. Many dealera use ebay as their junkyard. I've sat at many a coin store only to hear an employee ask what to do with a problem coin. "... put that one on ebay" I hear more often than not!!

I've done my share of buying on eBay but I prefer buying at shows. I also know pretty much going in that I will get most coins I collect for around Grey sheet, sometimes lower. On eBay I see most coins way over priced and above grey sheet by quite a bit.

With that said, there are deals to be had if you hunt them out, but nothing is better than looking at a coin in hand and making your decision and walking out with the coin. No opening up cases or arguing with sellers. If you like it, you buy it and it's done. If it's a problem coin, you have no one or anything to blame but yourself.

I make a living off eBay, but I love it and hate it. Just this week a guy returned a 1924-S PCGS MS62 Standing Liberty 25c. in an old green holder to me because, "It doesn't match my set." $762.50 returned and refunded. No takers on second chance offers. Thanks...

Still; it's easy to focus on the bad experiences. There are plenty of good ones too. Like I said, I still can make a living.

So your eBay business is your primary job? I ask because I have a job that allows me a lot of down time, and I am looking for another source of income. I have thought about selling coins, I just don't know where to get my product at a decent price in order to sell and make a profit.

All depends on the lengths you're willing to go to make a buck. If okay with feeding suckers, "inventory" is easy as can be the money. Difficulty arises only for those who find themselves with a spine.

    - Am I correct in understanding that you actually received $300 more than what you paid for the roll AND you got to keep at least 2 coins without payment on this deal?

I find ebay an excellent place to purchase coins, but not so much as a selling agent. There's always a large selection of graded or raw coins to select from on all coin types. I have added some of my best coins to my collection from ebay. As far as selling. I have sold hundreds of coins on ebay & have had good & horrible transactions. Like mentioned earlier, you need to know what your doing to make a decent profit. Plus the fees ebay collects are becoming more & more crazy each year. It's a much better place to purchase than sell. Sellers get the short end of the stick, as the seller obtains 99% of the transactions risks.

I can see that. I was thinking of getting into the "unsearched" roll business.

    I kid, I kid....
