I remember receiving my proof sets in the early 60's. These "sealed" envelopes were never sealed, but now they are?
You're correct. They arrived unsealed, so the fact that it's now sealed means the seller looked, saw it wasn't special, re-sealed it and is trying to sell to the un-knowledgeable person.
It is possible for these sets to seal themselves if stored in a humid environment as there was a gum sealer on the flaps unlike mint sets from 1968 and on which have no sealer.. This is not to say that they by the seller but I have heard reports of folks receiving them sealed and unsealed. Remember, they are 50 years old. The point of the thread was that the seller is providing and "extra" envelope for whe the byer does break open the set leavingthe door open for thebuyer to resell them as "sealed". I just thought tha was pretty weird.
True, I didn't really think about the possibility of the envelope self-sealing. That is a genuine possibility. I guess I just went straight to assuming the worst in people.
Not only weird, but downright shady. I don't care what anyone says, be it the envelope may have sealed itself or not, this seller is a fraud. Any time the seller suggests you could find a rare (and valuable) coin inside, it tips me off that they are aware of it and that they already checked it themselves. No one in the right mind is going to send off a truly "sealed" set with the knowledge it might have a valuable coin inside and not check it first. As if that wasn't enough to arouse your suspicion, the seller then tells you he will send an extra envelope! What a clown.
The seller is not intelligent. If they are targeting unknowledgable buyers, they just clued them in on his fraud by telling them he has extra envelopes.
