Just purchased a Gallic Roman Empire coin of Marius MARIUS (269). Antoninianus. Colonia Claudia Ara Obv: IMP C MARIVS P F AVG. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: CONCORDIA MILITVM. Clasped hands. 2.75g. 22.mm. Elmer 632; RIC 7; What I have read about Marius that he ruled after the death of Postumus in 269, some places I seen he ruled for 2 to 3 Days other places said he had to rule for at least 2 to 3 months because of the number of coins produced, does anyone know how long he ruled and where I can find reliable info., Thanks
Sear says a misinterpreted text seemed to suggest he only reigned two or three days. Most sources seem to indicate that his rule was from July/August to October/November AD 269.
According to the information that I have catalogued (which almost certainly came from Wikipedia), his rule was 2-3 months. While we don't know exactly how long he ruled, we do know what his first act as Gallic Emperor was..... letting the army sack the city of Moguntiacum!! (the army had just killed Postumus for refusing the same) Here's mine. It's one of the few coins that I've purchase raw.... Here's to hoping that it doesn't eventually come back as "Tooled"! (I seem to have a knack for sending tooled coins to NGC )
