    hi all,
I recently picked up this giant 1770 Russian 10 kopek, I've always wanted one but they are out of my price range ususally. I saw this one with flan chip (look like a mint error to me not damage?) for a price that wasn't unreasonable and jumped on it. The style looks good to me, and the size and weight seem ok. if anything, it may be a little on the big side, 48 mm and a big 64.g, but that seem ok to me. look ok to you guys? Siberian man?

WOW that's big! Dang it, now I want one yet I still haven't bought a 5 Kopek.

If these planchets where produced in a manner similar to current production techniques, I'd call it a clipped planchet.

No idea about the authenticity but it looks good to me :)

Looks OK to me too, I have several 5 kopecks of that period. Why would anyone not call the crescent a clipped planchet?

Nice one, 100% genuine and yes the clip is an error. These were issued for Siberia specifically.

I still believe that 18th century Russian coppers like this had a dual purpose as currency and also as self defense. Getting hit in the head by one of these has some legit stopping power.

I don't recall the details, but about this time period, the King of Sweden issued a decree that all coins must contain the full monetary value of metal; this led to the Swedish plate money. It's possible the Russians (next door to Sweden) felt compelled to mint large heavy coins too.

I sold two Swedish plate money of this general type in Stacks-Bowers auctions last year.

    thanks everyone!

glad it is ok. i thought it was, but wanted some expert opinions.

that plate money is interesting..i've never seen anything like that.

i thought they were foxes, but i guess they are sables...a member of the weasel family. you see them on siberian coat of arms sometimes,

had a low res vid, so put it on youtube. does this add anything to showing the coin vs. pictures alone? other than the fact that i need to trim my nails?

It nicely demonstrates the coin's size. Seeing the reflections as you move it around also brings it to life.

Might want to white balance your video if possible.
