Are S Mint coins sold by the mint in sewn bags? Are thought that San Fran coins were only put into proof sets. This is part of an ebay auction: "This lot contains 5 rolls of Brilliant Uncirculated 1970-S Lincoln Cents. These rolls came straight from a mint-sewn bag" Also found this auction: "Roll Eisenhower Dimes pre 1964" In what country did they make these?
The roll of Ike dimes is no doubt meant to be roosevelt ,, nothing surprises me anymore on ebay !!! the -S- mint cent, was produced up to I believe 1974 and then the san francisco mint went almost entirely to proof coins. Im sure if I missed the date someone will correct me.
No, you're correct -- the 1974 San Francisco cents were the last regular issue, business strike coins struck at that mint. After that they were essentially a proof-only operation. Living only an hour from the San Francisco Mint growing up, I remember the frenzy in the middle of that year about 1974-S cents. The rumor was apparently that they were making very few of them -- or production was suddenly stopping early in the year, not just stopping before 1975 -- and quite a few people started hoarding all the '74-S cents they could find. I wasn't even nine years old when the mania hit, and I remember searching my change religiously for a '74-S. Turns out that it was a fairly typical year for production as far as S-mint cents went to that time (something over 400 million pieces, I think).
