Not a cheap auction purchase but I thought it worth it. Worth a slab though not sure whether to send to NGC or PCGS. I have a about 10 other World coins to go too....
Nice coins, I collect those too. Why pay someone else to tell you what they are when you already know.
Coins are not sent for authentication but numerical grade....one or two points makes a huge financial difference. Some of us Brits are ideologically opposed to the practice but not I.
I assume then you have bought them to sell rather than collect and probably sell them to the US market. I find it rather funny that affter they have given the coin a grade they then print on the slab that it is a Great Britain 1841 Penny, as if one wouldn`t know that already
Why is that funny? They are simply identifying the coin...I would think it would be odd if they didn't do that. Have you ever seen a home appraisal without the address listed in the paperwork?
Any coin collector or dealer worth his or her salt would already know what the coin was. In most cases it is struck on the coin which is entombed in the plastic.
I agree with you...but I still think a slab should identify the coin. If not, one could easily open it and swap out the coin inside. But, I think our opinions differ in the value of the slab in general. I think they are a good thing often times. Now, with non-US coins the market doesn't favor than as strongly and thus they may not be as beneficial.
Another reason to indicate the identity of the coin on the slab is to distinguish business strikes from patterns, trial pieces, and alternative metals, of which there were MANY (although this applies much more to high denominations than to pennies). I see nothing "odd" about including the general description. edit//for these coins, I would prefer NGC.
