"The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee has scheduled a special telephone meeting for April 8 to recommend a new reverse for the American Eagle silver bullion coin.

If the Mint follows the advice of CCAC members to adopt a new reverse design, it would be the first design change since the coin was introduced in November 1986." -coin world-

Gobrecht Dollar.jpg I hope so but these folks (CCAC) don't seem to be coin collectors.
I would like to see the Gobrecht flying eagle design ...but what do I know View attachment 319881

  4. I would love to listen in on that meeting. Curious about alternative designs. It would have to be an eagle to keep the American Silver Eagle label. I would have thought they might change the obverse and not the reverse. TC

I will lobby for a transition from the Silver Eagle to the Silver Beagle. How can you not love that face?

"in recent news, mint officials have admitted to a highly embarrassing mistake that they have decided to just 'go with' since 1986. it seems that the memo mint employees received was missing the letter 'b' changing the iconic reverse of the worlds most popular bullion coin from its intended 'beagle' to the now implemented 'eagle'. intentions to correct this mistake are only now being recognized in 2014"

Don't those people have anything better to do than recommend design changes?

Hmmm. The piece is called a "Silver America Eagle" so, IMO, anything that represents a "Bald Eagle" would be required. Otherwise they'll have to change the name.

But then, that would not be the first time that the CCAC did something blatantly stupid to be PC.

Since they used the WLH obverse, they should have used the WLH reverse (THAT'S AN EAGLE!), rather than the "corporate" eagle they used. They used both the obverse & reverse from the buffalo nickel on the gold buffalo, why not both from the WLH on the ASE? Of coarse to the CCAC, that reverse would be too "busy". Sheesh! Thank goodness the CCAC wasn't around during the golden age of coin design.

I don't think anything will change, but it'd nice if they at least introduce new safety features like RCM did with the Maple.

The current reverse is rather institutionally bland. One of the main reasons I've never cared for the series.

I agree...the reverse is pretty boring. I'd be OK with a new reverse. What I would hate to see if them starting do a new reverse EVERY year. As long as they don't do that...I'm cool with it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a seated liberty eagle reverse.

I believe that the Gobrecht flying eagle design should be brought back in some fashion as either a bullion coin or in a series of collector classics similar to the way the Royal Canadian Mint issued a 1998-dated 90th anniversary set for the Mint itself.

While they are at it, how about revising the reverse of the nickel......that revision would be long overdue, actually by about 76 years. I have a suggestion too...how about using the buffalo rev. from the 2005 nickel?

Over the past three years, they've sold over 100M Silver Eagles. And so why do they think they need to change something about it?

Mmmm no in the case of the CACC that IS their job, to make recommendations on coinage designs.

You'll have to get the law changed. When they made the changes for the reverse back in 2004 the VA delegation was able to ram through a clause that requires Monticello to be on the back of the five cent piece in perpetuity.

If any coin is long overdue of a design change, it's the Dime.

Depending on the design I wouldn't mind a change to the ASE. That being said I don't agree with some of the previous comments about using designs that were on previous coins. A lot of us complain that US coin design has fallen to all time lows but our best ideas is to reuse a previous design?

I'd rather have a brand new design. Hopefully it would be a good/great design but at least an attempt is being made to create a new golden age of US coin designs. However with all the politics currently involved with coin design I don't expect a golden age any time soon.
