Not being aware of this portion of Native American history, it didn't seem like something I would ever see on the Native American dollar, but I really like some of the designs. They look good. Not sure which is my favorite.... http://mintnewsblog.com/2014/03/2015-native-american-dollar-design-candidates/
Thanks for the link! Being a structural engineer this interests me. I like design 09 and 13 the best...no need to see an upclose view of some imaginary face. In design 09 you see the steel beam being ridden by the Mohawk steel worker (although his safety tether doesn't go anywhere - oops!). Cool!
#15 for me. Seeing the construction motifs and American Indians just made me think of the Village People!! lol I know they were 2 different guys in the group but just popped into my mind
I honestly don't like any of them. From these options...I would pick #7 because of the unique perspective. However, I doubt it will win because outside of the wording...there is no way to tell it's related to Native Americans.
I came here to say they would choose the ugliest one. I'm having a hard time deciding which one that is because these all look awful. I guess I hate numbers 14 & 15 the least, so I'll go with those as being my favourites.
I don't particularly like any of them. If the "coin" is minted, I would hope it would be a commem not a new native american coin design.
I can't wait for the years that they commemorate the hard way of life which was endured by the Native Americans after they were rounded up and put on worthless reservations. I mean seriously, the jump from a peace pipe to the building of Sky Scrapers in New York is leaving quite a bit of history on the table IMO and even though the Native Americans played an important role in Iron Work, I would think that there would be more important aspects of their culture to commemorate than this. BTW, all the designs are just silly and will mean nothing to the average individual.
No one said they have to show the history in order. My problem with these designs is many of them don't clearly indicate what is being honored. Most that do,do not clearly indicate they are working the high steel. Those that show the high steel well do not clearly indicate the workers are Native Americans. Probably the best at showing both is number 13. He is reaching for an I beam and he is clearly way above the skyline, and it does state that it is for the Mohawk Ironworkers. The only thing I would add is to have him standing at the end of a beam that runs back to the rim.
As a former Ironworker, I'll definitely be picking one of these up whatever the design. However, I am not a huge fan of any of the designs. The last one with the shirtless guy is a little homoerotic. #4 He would never be riding a beam like that. It would teeter to his side and become unstable. I guess #8 with the connector sitting on the beam is my favorite. Not sure if they wore feathers under their hardhat though.
