Does anyone know what reference a VP # is referring to? I've never seen this before this week and now I've seen several on teletrade and ebay! http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2316&lot=1269
FOUND IT!!!: Variety Plus: Form their web site: "NGC VarietyPlus Important articles What is a Variety? Standard References One of the valuable services offered by NGC is the attribution of coin varieties. By varieties, we mean coins which differ from their basic design type in some distinctive way and are thus differentiated by collectors. Thousands of varieties have been photographed and cataloged in reference books, making them highly collectable. Now your variety coins gain all the advantages of NGC grading and authentication when you choose VarietyPlus in addition to any grading tier. To receive a variety attribution with uncertified coins being submitted for grading, simply choose VarietyPlus on your submission form, fill in the Variety column for that line with the type of variety you're seeking (Overton, VAM, VP, etc.) or, if known the exact variety number. Either way, NGC will examine your coin and enter the correct variety attribution on its grading label. A $7 fee is charged for this service in addition to the regular fee for the grading tier you've selected. In the case of coins already graded and encapsulated by NGC, you may have the correct variety attribution added by submitting the encapsulated coin under our Designation Review service. The fee for Designation Review is $10. The Complete VarietyPlus Catalog NGC maintains a comprehensive guide to the varieties we recognize on our website, and a future release of this catalog includes important attribution information and detailed photographs. Thanks Frank, I just came from the NGC site myself and was going to post it, Ya beat me to it. As if there is not enough confusion they have to come up with their own numbers! Whats next PFS (Post First Strike) designations. http://www.ngccoin.com/VPCategories.aspx
Wow, this is an eye opener! If I read NGC's web site correctly they only will attribute recognized varieties (What's on there VP list) which is a extremly small list for the Jefferson Nickel series. I thought they went by other published listings such as Breen, Cherrypickers, Wexler and the such. Oh well it's not like they'll lose my business because they never had it. I have bought some NGC slabbed coins when the price was right but overall they are my least favorite of the top 4 TPG's. Just don't care for their big bulky slab. But, that's just me.
That's why as a nickel collector I've always been partial to ANACS, although I'm not so sure about that new holder! I guess that means First Strike is in the Red Book! LOL
Good point, I may have to write David Hall about that As for ANACS, I'd worry far more about their new, loose grading standards than I would the holder.
It means variety plus category detail, just some new jargon to confuse the numimatic world, personaly I think it is a gimic. a2J
Haven't looked at many coins in the new holders, I have many in the older holders that I'm very pleased with the grading of. ANACS (The old ANACS anyway) in my opinion did the best grading & attributing for the Jefferson Nickel Series. I only have purchased 1 coin in the new holder and am satisfied with it but have only actually physically looked at a handfull at most.
