Great coin and a great story link! Did you know it was counterfeit when you first saw it?

I realized that there were many counterfeits out there in the world. One of my hobbies is Metal Detecting, and a lot of fellow detectors always seem to find counterfeit KG's... Didn't realize someone had already sat down and categorized most of them!

Yeah, I was aware of what it was when I picked it up. These Machin Mills pieces tend to bring big premiums.

Is it already slabbed and identified? Just an amazing coin... To think that this coin was minted at a very secretive site... at night so that no one would be the wiser as to what was going on. Just amazing.

Gotta wonder, if they had TV and smart phones back then, would they have still produced such items? They had little to distract them back them in the way of electronics, tv, phones, etc... etc...

I wonder if the point was really deception with some of these, as there were no genuine half penny coins of this type minted in 1787 or 1788.

    isn't that a redundancy?

That's really cool. I would have never known.

No it is an identification of where a particular counterfeit originated. An if I remember correctly the principals of Machins Mills did have some actual legitimate coinage contracts.

Vermont coinages were the only authorized coinages actually produced at the mint.

That's a really cool piece with an amazing story. What kind of premiums do these typically bring? Colonial and pre-US mint issued coins are not my strength.

In the area of $200 in this condition, at open auction and as a raw coin.
