I've been wanting to expand my collection of silver coins to include the silver Brittania and Libertad coins. I find these coins very nice to look at. I've done some research online and compared prices. Does anyone have any suggestions of the best and safest places to purchase them online and what to look for? I'd like to collect them in proof and uncirculated from their start date to the present date. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For current Brittanias you should try the Royal Mint's website. For older ones, EBay England would be worth a look-see.

I have collected both of these series and will share my experience gained while collecting these.

Silver Britannia: The mintages of these bullion coins are pretty low. So, by definition these should be tough to get. But I have always found them with dealers in shows (though never in quantity). Also the premium on these are higher then other silver bullion coins.

Mexican Libertad: This is another challenging series with several key dates. 1988 and 1989 are two tough dates and command a premium over melt. And in recent years I have noticed that 1998 is becoming the toughest date in this series. The mintage for 1998 is very low and it usually sells for 8-10 times of it melt price. 1996 and 2000 are also low mintage coins and command a small premium.

Also, in 1991, the Mexican mint changed the design of these libertads. And they produced 1991 dated coins with both designs. The second design of 1991 is a tough coin to locate but sometime you can find it with dealers who doesn't know the difference and mark it as a regular 1991 coin.

It will take some time to build these sets but once done, they look impressive and give much joy. Good luck!
