In Vauction's last Thursday i won two coins, that night i got the invoice and Friday said it was sent. Monday(yesterday) the coins showed up, that was fast!!!! The first coin i posted, a few days back, a camp gate w/doors, i wanted to wait on this coin till i had it in hand. IMO, it is one of two key coins in the 12 Caesar bronze series. Julius Caesar doesn't have a large bronze coin with his image on it, so i had to go with this issue. Otho is the other coin i feel is a key, which has a portrait of him on a coin, but tend to be very expensive, one could argue that Caligula is a key also, but there are many different issues of his coins. So if you have a Julius Caesar coin or if you have a coin with Victory and Minerva on it post it. also it was a Ex Madroosi collection coin, so if you own one of his coins please post it too!! Julius Caesar..46-45...BC. Ae Dupondius, C. Clovius. Obv. Winged draped bust of Victory right, star in left field. Rev.Minerva advancing left, holding trophy over right shoulder, and carrying spears and shield, serpent at her feet. 26mm x 14.24 g. seller notes, Ex Madroosi collection, a nice example with clear details. Crawford 476/1a...Rare 6..
This a VC auction win? If so, mine came yesterday also. But not gonna share it for a bit. It is a Madroosi too. Cool coin though.
Beautiful coin John. I actually love the entire coin, but the serpent is extra neat. I have several JC coins, but only one with his portrait: JULIUS CAESAR AR Denarius OBVERSE: CAESAR IMP, laureate head right, lituus & simpulum behind. REVERSE: M METTIVS, Venus standing left with Victory & scepter, shield resting on globe; control letter G to left Rome January-February 44 BC 3.81g, 18mm RSC 34
Cool coin, Eng! Was hoping to bid on a JC today but the price went over my head. Happy to be able to admire yours instead.
I love that coin, John! A big Imperatorial bronze with copious detail and superb eye-appeal. Well-done! My one and only Imperatorial coin is silver... Man. Acilius Glabrio, 49 BC. AR Denarius, 18 mm, 3.75 g. Rome mint. Obv: Laureate head of Salus right; behind, SALVTIS. Rev: Valetudo standing left, resting arm on column and holding snake; on right., MN ACILIVS; on left, III VIR VALETV. Ref: Crawford 442/1a; Seaby Acilia 8; Sydenham 922.
I have another I am quite proud of: JULIUS CAESAR AR Denarius OBVERSE: Diademed head of Venus right. REVERSE: CAESAR - Aeneas advancing left, carrying Anchises and palladium. Carthage 47 to 46 BC 4.0g, 17mm CRI 55, Sydenham 1013, RRC 458/1, S 1402 However, I do not own any JC bronze coins. Once again, John, your new coin is outstanding!!
Thanks for the comments, does anyone have any info on Madroosi collections, his name sounds cool..Madroosi..
Thanks jw, i've had my eye on a couple on vcoins very expensive, when i saw this on vauction, i was able to get it for more than a half what they wanted on vcoins, i think auctions are the way to go.. now off to get Otho...i have three Caesar coins to get...
Otho is the only bum I need. One I wanted sold right when I was close to buying it after it sat for a year. Owell :/
Mat are you looking a for silver coin, do you have a Caligula denarius..i might try to do the 12 Caesar in fouree'..
That's even more frustrating than just losing an auction. It happened to me once - bought the coin on eBay and the seller notified me it had been sold that morning in his store. Nobody wanted that friggin coin for a year, until I did.
What sucked worse is that I knew the coin right away when it was posted on another messageboard. Thats how I found out, it wasnt due to an attempted buy. All the others available are way more then I wanna pay.
Quite a nice coin you got there, Eng. I really like lt. It has the kind of patina which I like. I do have a Caesar portrait bronze, low grade though - It has his portrait on one side, and another character on the other, I forget now who. I will have to try to find it and take a picture of it. Here is my lone Caesar in silver, and my Otho.
oh wow, what a great lookin' coin ENG! what's up with the cool "scale like" texture? was that on the die or is that part of the patina? looks very cool whatever it is. question: Who or what was Madroosi?
There are several types of Minerva Victrix reverses in the Septimius Severus series but I only have a poor example of the one showing Minerva holding a statue of Victory. Maybe Martin has a nice one. I know little about Domitian but he also has a Minerva holding a Victory. Unfortunately it does not have a legend naming the two as seen on the Septimius.
Ummm, I don't have any Julius Caesar coins ... *sigh* => but how 'bout a Domitian straight-up, with a Minerva chaser!!?
Very nice! My first thought, "Minerva is shooting laser beams out of her eyes...". Ah, the minds of teenage boys... (NO ONE is allowed to make a joke about this statement.)
