Lincoln 1918 D ? Color

Discussion in 'US Coins Forum' started by John D (Bud) Williams, Mar 11, 2014.

  1. The color on this coin is just strange. Here are a couple of pics. Please comment as to whether there is a problem with the coin that you might see. When I look at the coin in my hand straight on the color on the left of the coin is kinda muddy. There is a surface gloss but not from flow lines. At an angle the center part of the obverse looks iridescent red. Any ideas?

not sure, almost looks like someone used a wire wheel on it, we'll see what others say...

  4. I'm thinking dipped in something as an effort to color the coin, but really don't know for sure. It could be toning, strange look though.

I do not seee any signs of whizzing. I think whatever was done was chemical.

Are all the photos only one coin? The reverse on top right is far different to the bottom left reverse. Either way it does appear more chemical

When I first looked "fingerprint" popped into my mind regarding the right side of the obverse.
IF that's the case then the coin could have been dipped to attempt to remove the evidence.

  10. same here... just don't know how part of the coin is effected and part not.

  11. That makes sense, but why is the effect not more consistent across the coins surface. Maybe the fingerprint oils mixed with the chemical .... heck I'm reaching... just don't know

  12. Sorry, changed the light source direction and there is a piece of lint on the bottom of the pic in the top right.

  13. Humm.... It doesn't seem to have effected the reverse. I think I'll send it off to PCGS and see what they say.

no, don't do that, they'll just say altered surface, first need to send to a lincoln cent expert, Ken Potter comes to mind, then if he says improperly mixed alloy, then off to pcgs, thats how I did mine, just never graded it

  15. Thanks Rick... I think I'll make this a project, and thanks for the heads up on the expert, I made a note of his name

  16. I think it has been inadvertently coated with something. You can see flow lines on the left side of the obverse and the reverse (see pic). But dont' know if the coin is worth enough to send into conservation and most of that would be an effort to figure out if the coating is removable with their standard process 1918 D 1c Color0609a.jpg 1918 D 1c Color0613a.jpg DSC_0005a.jpg . Any ideas?
you can plainly see some material has been either wiped on or someone tried to wipe it off and thought better of it.

Yes one can see some type of cleaning wipe or a hard rub off of a dip.I could not be sure with 1st set photo.
This old desktop wouldn't zoom in to well on 1st set of photos.
Still a nice Keeper grade 1918-D Wheat cent!
