Found this in a junk bin for 5 US. Putting together a German states type set would be some task. The list just goes on..... At least I have one.

    Nice 1 Mat MS-6? + looking.
I spend some time in South America and also picked up the very next year 1897 but not a MS/Bu grade.the 1/4 Real is a small coin a lot of the older dates like yours and mine somehow got trapped in time. some in rolls like yours. but mine was found in a old cabinet I was told.

thanks..I got it for 13 bucks shipped, similar coins (I don't know about that exact date..or if it's special?) seem to go for pretty close to that, I probably got a fairly good deal.

what a cool little coin jello and mat!

looks like guatemala is volcano hotspot... literally and figuratively...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_volcanoes_in_Guatemala

looks like there was a major eruption in 1853, wonder if that's what is depicted on the coin?

The prices on these always get high. They must have melted most of them down or something. I finally got one last year. There's a lot of modern, low mintage French coins which makes it hard to complete a series.

Its mark free in my eyes, i'd say MS63/64 maybe? Yours has a great die crack!

Since my thread on this coin is being ignored, here is a Piastre I got. Raw.

Lots of color. The fields are clean in the obverse, but the portrait is either a tiny bit soft or perhaps ever so lightly circulated. Trying to decide if I should send it in to NGC or not....,, Reverse is a gem. Img_1481.jpg Img_1480.jpg
