I Gave It a Try

I am putting together a silver Roosevelt Dime set in MS-66 FT (or FB).
    I want a matched set.
Only one coin to go (1961) BUT it hasn't shown up for sale anywhere that I can find.
I can find MS-65 FT and even one MS-67 FT but no MS-66 FT
So after 2 years of searching (and admittedly getting hyper) I extended my search to just MS-66 dimes with the hopes of finding one that is FT but not labeled such.

Thought I might have found one on eBay but between the slab being rather scratched and the image not in sharp focus I couldn't tell for sure.
    But for $15 I took a shot.

    The Answer: Close but "Nope".
The upper band is clearly and cleanly split.
BUT the lower band is at best marginal. The strike is a bit weak but might have qualified as split if there wasn't so much "noise" on it.
Sort of like FB on a Merc with a scratch across it disqualifying it.
Or FS on a Jefferson with a scratch across it disqualifying it.

The 1961 is one of the top 3 hardest to find in FT.
    The search goes on.
Maybe an outside shot at finding one at the Whitman show this month.

    Kanga,

I guess it depends on how badly you want a 66FT, and how much you are willing to risk to get one.

Why not go ahead and get a 67FT, and then search the NGC & PCGS Registries for those sets that have a 66FT. If you find one to your liking, you can always contact the set owner and offer the 67 in a trade.

Nice idea EXCEPT for the huge price difference.
    Per PCGS:
    -- 1961 Roosevelt Dime MS-66 FB = $175
    -- 1961 Roosevelt Dime MS-67 FB = $2350

    I don't want the -66 THAT badly.

Great Collections sold several PCGS MS66FB last year. One for $56 and the other two for $100. No NGC though

    Correction: the $56 one was a "D".

Yep! I agree! I'm glad I don't collect those little buggers.
