Possibly the most ridiculous posting on ebay?

Technically, it is the "die" that is the error but since we cannot collect "die" errors, we collect what is produced from the erroneous die's which are correctly referred to as Varieties.

I know...I said that in the second sentence of the posting you quoted. ;)

I know the difference. I just don't really collect varieties or errors so I personally lump them together in my mind.

I'm not defending this guy nor am I debating you, but he does say in the description that it is a stock photo. Perhaps he got a roll full of them (assuming they are real DDOs).

I do agree however in that I wouldn't buy one. I won't go as far as saying someone's an idiot though for buying one if they really like it. Especially since they're not very expensive. Now if someone paid big money then I would probably say that is being an idiot. But only cause you can get it for much cheaper.

That's a good way to distinguish the difference. I like it. I understand where Camaro is coming from however. As I mentioned earlier, I don't particularly like collecting Doubled Dies but I wouldn't mind owning one of the famous ones he mentions if I could get it for below market value.

They aren't DDOs. It isn't even really a mint error by my standards. It is die deterioration, which is a normal part of the life of the die.

Well whether it is a true DDO or not I stand by my post. What I'm getting at is anything that is not common. Each collector chooses what he/she likes to collect. We may not agree with it, but it's their money and satisfaction. Can't really say they are wrong or idiots for doing what they like (as long as they're not paying above market value).

That's true, and I never called them wrong or idiots for buying the coin. I was just clarifying that the coin in the link is not a doubled die.

I just found this thread today by accident. I like searching for RPMs DDs and such and I actually saw this eBay listing the day it was posted, the first thing I did was check for attribution. I also has a hard time seeing the doubled eye lid from the picture originally, but was finally able to make it out. The seller did nothing wrong except take poor photographs.
I really enjoy CT, I've made some friends (all be it cyber friends) and have even bought coins from members. For the most part people on here are extremely helpful and share knowledge and advice freely, but also there are those that can't wait to find something to ridicule others for. It's a shame we don't all take Thumper's daddy's advice, "if you can't something nice don't say anything at all".
I also don't think anybody would have bashed the seller if he had listed a Morgan VAM in low grade.
