Hello. I have acquired a big bronze ancient Greek coin. It weighs 26.88 g. Could you please assist me to identify it . The coin did survive after long environment deterioration. Thanks a lot.. Charles
First, let me say that I am by know means an expert on Greek coins. That being understood, I think this my be an Alexander the Great AE26 Tetradrachm ancient imitation of an issue from Arados from 328-320 BC. Take a look at Price 3332 imitation on Wildwinds.com and see what you think. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/macedonia/kings/alexander_III/t.html
Totally different style. The OP's coin does not match any official issue that I am familiar with. It is more likely to be the bronze core of a plated contemporary counterfeit. Without visible control marks, further identification is impossible.
Hi. Can we definitely exclude the possibility of an ancient imitation? The coin is also curved from the reverse side. What control marks should I look for? Could close photo shots serve better. Charles
My first impression is that it is not ancient but there is not enough left to make me sure. I am not a specialist in these by any means.
