Picked this up a few days ago wondering what the grade might be and a value I know it's a comm but a nice piece for my collection
The first thing you should do if you don't want it to lose value is take it out of that soft flip. It probably contains PVC which can destroy a coin. As a matter of fact, the "dark shadow" on the reverse around "ONE DOLLAR" has me concerned. It might not be a bad idea to give it a soak in acetone, rinse thoroughly with distilled water and pat dry. The coin looks to be in pretty nice condition, but with some weakness of strike on the eagle. This was typical because the dies were "planed" rather than "basined". The problem is that more than 44.6 million were produced and the great majority of those never left the Treasury vaults. There are literally millions of them available in Mint State. The optimal collecting grade is MS65 and given the availability in both raw and certified specimens, prices tend to be lower than for similarly-graded Morgans from most other years. Chris
2"x2" Saflips are probably the best. JP's Corner is a good place to get them. They can be used for almost any size coin up to 39mm, and you can get them with or without the insert for date/mm info. Scroll down to the middle of the page...... http://www.jpscorner.com/coin-flips.html Chris
