Here is a PCGS MS64+ 1890 Morgan. I would like to get your opinion on whether this coin would upgrade or not if resent to PCGS. Thanks for your help!
It might be close, but I'm leaning toward, "No!" You have the hit on her eyebrow, the vertical gouge on the right side of the eagle's breast and the hit on the rim near 12 o'clock on the reverse. Chris
CAC hasn't been accepting new memberships for a while. Plus to join I believe I need to be a member of the ANA. And I live in Canada so shipping would be crazy. I'd rather just send it to PCGS
My experience has been that if you submit it enough times, RAW, anything is possible. However, if you submit it in the 64+ Plastic, I doubt that it would ever get beyond the initial inspection and would return to you in MS64+ Plastic 10 out of 10 times.
That is why I would crack it out. I'd have a much higher chance at the coin upgrading if I sent it raw. They rarely upgrade coins if they are in the plastic. I have heard about them upgrading slabbed coins, but it is quite rare.
I think it might get a 65 if sent in raw but it's not worth the cost or the risk. It could come back as just a 64. nice looking coin.
I'm already sending some coins in for grading, so I will get this one graded. I'm going to crack it out, and I'm hoping it upgrades because if it does it will be worth about $1500! The possible gain is worth the risk
Howdy as a Morgan guy for over 30years-and yes just morgans I had my share of breaking morgans out and then resent them in again, My advice is LEAVE IT ALONE! You have a Great looking ms64 coin,Now unless you think a higher grade will get you a few more dollars-think- will that make a difference? If you should re-sumit it be warn you can get it back at a lower grade-like I said I've done it and regretted it in which I don"t do it anymore,.Well I believe you do have a strong ms65+ morgan but again the graders are all different and see's a coin different then the other! NO two will grade it the same, let alone the same grader if he has it again.Do you just collect morgans or just starting out? Like I said I've been collecting morgans before NGC or PCGS came into exitence and now I have all my morgans in ms64 maybe a few 65's but Iam starting another collection in ms65, I hope. Good luck on your morgans!
When I'm older, I want to be a coin dealer. Right now I'm trying to figure out possible ways to profit with coins. A lot of this is just for experience. Although, if the coin does downgrade, I could resubmit it until it gets an MS65 as I think it is an MS65+ as you said, so it shouldn't take too many tries to get an MS65. The difference in value of this coin in an MS64 as opposed to MS65 is huge. I think it is worth the risk
I say no, it won't upgrade. From the angle of the photo, you can see the light abrasions on the cheek. They're not deep, but there a more than a few. Strong 64, like it's already graded.
Not worth the time or money to submit. Keep it in the holder the way it is, and assume it is high in grade. Value would jump significantly, if it did upgrade, as it is a common coin in 64, but not in 65, so an upgrade would be unlikely for a borderline coin. Figure you won't get the upgrade, but go ahead and submit of you want--good chance of a downgrade to 64 as much as an upgrade, unless you specify minimum grade. I think the coin is properly graded, and the plus may be generous.
The listing was on eBay and I didn't end up getting it in time. Someone else snatched it up before I could.
