First impression is au details. But i'm sure you wouldn't be playing GTG on a details coin. So 56 1/2 Okay 55
My initial thought on it is 55, but I think I may be hard on coins in general. The more I look at it the more I think it will grade as a 58.
When I enlarge these outstanding photos, I can see what some of you are talking about on the obverse - just the tiniest abrasion of the high points above the ear, on the cheek, and at the tip of the beard. So maybe it goes AU, but no less than a 58. The reverse is about as good s it gets, though. If it finds its way into the MS category, it might well jump up to a 64. This might be one of those coins that, if you sent it in to different TPG's or even the same TPG at different times, you'd receive some really variable results.
I think we're all pretty much on the spot on this one, Matt. I think many of us, here, too, know, this one could plausibly grade as high as MS64 for the market, if you throw off the wear many of us are seeing on "cabinet friction." It's happened. That's just market grading.
Hello the coin as whole looks good the obverse and reverse-wheat area looks good, lincoln and its lines also are nice, Being into wheat cents and 1909s vdb's , i have had my share of them- No yours over all is great except for one Very Important thing,it has been cleaned and swipe some time ago, just looking at it with the naked eye Iam sure you to can see the whrils, my guess it could come back marked clean or DOA. Again just saying.
I'm in the AU58 camp. I see what appears to be some wear on the cheek and beard. But, I'd love to see it in hand. It's a beauty. Matt, I have a 1909-S VDB that I"m planning on sending in for grading. I was going to use PCGS but you have chosen NGC. Any particular reason you are sending this one to NGC?
Has your experience been they are a better choice for Lincoln cents? When I do send mine in, I want to send it to the right TPG. PCGS has historically been my default...but NGC is an excellent company. If NGC is the better choice for Lincolns, perhaps I should use them.
PCGS is slightly more strict on color but other than that I find them to be interchangeable on grading usually.
My first thought was an MS65 but I'm seconding guessing myself after reading the comments from this esteemed group. It is a nice looking coin whatever the final rating.
