i was wondering, since some presidential dollars escape the mint without edge lettering, would it be possible for any 2007 or 2008 sacagewea dollars to have escaped WITH edge lettering? just curious jlogan
The collars used to strike the Sacagawea dollars and the Presidential dollars are the same, no edge lettering. The edge lettering for the Presidential dollars is done on a separate machine in a different room. It is highly unlikely that a bin of Sacagawea dollars would ever get into that room and get processed. How the Presidential dollars without edge lettering got into circulation was when one or more bins somehow bypassed the room where they were supposed to go through the collar press to add the lettering.
anyone have any idea what a James K Polk with no edge lettering is worth? i have an offer of $200. found it in $1,500 of dollars today

Having it in a TPG slab helps as well since nobody is going to pay a premium for a coin which may not be gradeable. The PCGS Price Guide shows ranges from $160 in MS62 up to $500 for MS67. For a Presidential Dollar coin that is missing the edge lettering, these appear to be common for an MEL as PCGS has graded a total of 1,069 coins that are missing that edge lettering. I have no idea how many NGC has graded but its possible that its a comparable number. If you only paid a buck for it, $200 sounds like a reasonable offer. Congrats on the find!
