Tiberius, 14-37 A.D. Fouree Denarius, silver plated bronze, dimensions TBA Obv.: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS; Laureate head right. Rev.: PONTIF MAXIM; Livia as Pax seated right, holding spear and branch.
Very cool JA. Now that's a great example of delamination on a fouree. Does one call it delamination on an ancient?
I thought delamination was a form of error strike in which a portion of the surface of the coin was separated during striking. This is an example of outer plating being worn or corroded off long after striking.
Gotta get one of these zombie coins! I particularly like the one you have that AJ put in his fancy drop-shadow template.
I would have stayed away from the TP. It looks to have bronze disease. I had a faustina I get some and it was just a small spot, even after treating it several times it came back. So I unloaded it.
Nice to see some one else collecting fouree's, very nice John.. The zombie coins are very cool, here's a couple of mine.. Tiberius.. Julius Caeser
I've seen a lot of fouree "tribute penny's" for sale here of late. For that matter I've seen a lot of tribute penny's for sale period. I don't know if more have been found or if more are just returning to the market.
Not all that long ago, fourrees were dirt cheap and no one wanted the ugly ones. Now it seems there are people who seek them out and pay. There are fourrees that are peeled, chipped and just worn. I really prefer the worn ones to the peeled. I show four pages of them starting here: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/fourree.html
Those are great pages Doug. I always enjoy rereading your work. I didn't pay that much for the coin. I certainly don't chase fourees with wads of money. So I answer the question you pose on the first page as such: not to be avoided if the price is right.
Very nice OP coin. I only have one fouree that's certainly not a tribute penny and not from that era.
kind of a strange color for BD isn't it? maybe it something else, like the blue stuff on this coin.. here's a coin i "baked" after cleaning...didn't look like this on the way it the oven. here the reverse now.. pretty!
