I think if they start distinguishing between the quality (real or perceived) of the grading services, they're starting to stray away from the "we're only a venue" model which has legally protected them thus far. I'm not sure they want to do anything to jeopardize their "venue" status.
While I will always suggest that collectors collect coins instead of speculate, gambling isn't exactly the term that I would use. Yes it is true that grading is subjective, but even that is limited in the real world of buying and selling coins. Most grading issues come up with mint state coins MS60 and higher. If collectors would take more time to learn the ins and outs of this hobby, the gambling could be left out.
Well, I was being sarcastic on 3 and 4. My preference would be category 3 be classified as "uncertified", because the certification is useless, and that category 4 be banned.
Thanks Susan for the info. Actually I was unaware of item specfics (IS) being implemented it the coin catagory as I do not frequent the eBay forums very much. After thinking about this, I an not sure this will be very useful with coins, but I am willing to try them. I have used IS when shopping for a computer on eBay and I found them useful. However, when shopping for a computer, you essentially are looking for a product that is a collection of different attributes or "specifics" and therefore the IS's can help in the search process. However, for the most part, this is not how you search for coins. In some cases I could see how this would be used by people but I would have liked to see different IS's. I absolutely do not like how these IS's are the same over the whole US Coins category. I could think of some very useful item specifics that could be used in the mints sets, proof sets, commemoratives and other categories. I would love to search in mint sets in which I could exclude all "after market" mint set, or those with out the original mint packaging. Oh well, perhaps these IS's will get better over time. As far as pre-filled information, I would love it if I could enter in a country of origin and a KM# and have all the other info filled out for me. But, even KM#'s are not specific enough, so this is a pipe dream. Best Regards, - Hal

The reason NGC is the only grading company providing direct access to their Pop Reports is quite simple. NGC's Pop Reports are FREE and available to anyone. PCGS - charges $40 a yr for access to their Pop Reports. ANACS on the other hand only makes their Pop Report available once per year - in a printed format - that you must request and order as well as pay for it. I'm not sure of the amount. ICG has no Pop Report. Their last explanation provided to me for this is because they have not been around long enough yet and they are afraid that unscrupulous individuals could distort the information and thus create a false market. So NGC is the only compnay who CAN, or should I say WILL, make their Pop Reports available to Ebay. And for the reasons already given - I would think they will continue to be the only ones to do so.
GD, I stand corrected on my NGC pre-filled information opinion. I find it interesting, though, that eBay has stated that they are planning on adding other grading companies. Under the circumstances, I don't see how that will be possible. That's only going to leave the lower tier grading companies and I would hate for eBay to give collectors the impression that they are on a par with NGC. Also, why would you not buy the coin that jimmy asked about? I'm just curious. I thought it was very attractive, but I figure you saw something that I didn't and I don't know World Coins very well.
Well I certainly hope they don't either Susan. But to the best of my knowledge - none of the other grading companies even have a population report. As to the coin - primarily because of the seller - a feedback of 37 - I never heard of them before - and they are offering an uncertified $4,000.00 coin No thank ya ma'am - not a chance I'd risk it.
"Ebay Item Specifics", is a great way to put it. Sounds so much better than, "We just struck a deal with NGC, and this is how we're going to shove it down your throats". LINK #1 LINK #2
Next, NGC will offer to sell them on eBay for you. Geez... It seems like the only part they are missing. Regards - Hal
