I would have to say VG-8 or better based on the first two photos. Cheeck and jaw look nearly smooth but not quite by the photo. Lou
70... oh, you mean the coin? VG-10. Just a bit too much wear for a 12 IMO, nonetheless nice coin :thumb:
I may very well be wrong, but I'm thinking that the coin may be F-15. It seems like there are full upper wheat stalks on the back, and I see some detail in Lincoln's hair and jacket. I also wonder if it may be somewhat of a weak strike, judging by the second 9 in the date. However, the area resting against Lincoln's profile that is darker red with a black spot would concern me.
I'd say it's close to F-12, if the pics were a bit larger and coin not in a holder, it would be easier to tell. Not exactly sure what a G-8 is, if it's an 8 then it's a VG.
I think the pictures aren't showing the coin well enough, and maybe the holder isn't helping. The wheat stalks are nearly unworn on the reverse. V.D.B. is clearly visible holding it at regular reading distance. There is wear on the face, jaw and cheek smooth but not smoothed together, no better than F15 according to the ANA guide. And that annoying corrosion at the forehead (which looks much worse in the photo). But it got a VF30 with PCGS.
I was going to say f-12, maybe its the shots from the camera but that face looks like there is little to no distinction between the cheek and jaw.
I'm going to say that PCGS graded this coin F15---the photos aren't the best and I think they are not showing all of the detail. The Wheat looks like it has more detail than a G or VG....and face seems to have alittle wear but not alot. It looks like one of these photos from an ebay seller....if it is make sure you are getting the coin in the photo. Speedy
Ah, perhaps you read my answer at post #9. Again, it was graded VF30, PCGS. I blame the photo quality (my own), and that the obverse does not make VF30 (the reverse makes it easily, IMHO).
Reading the thread now, that sounds about right. Looks like a slightly weak obverse strike fooled many. The details on the wheat on the reverse seem consistent with a VF or even XF coin, which is what led me to state 25+ in the previous post....Mike
acanthite, I did not see your answer. I have been collecting coins since 1947, and I do know a little about them...I'm not at all supprised that it was a VF30. Ed
OK, I'm glad to hear that, I was wondering since many of the estimations earlier in the thread were very low. I posted this coin primarily because I was having some trouble seeing that it was really VF30, at least on the obverse. Thanks for your vote of confidence.
ear, bowtie, some hair detail = VF per photograde. Cant see the wheats enough to grade the reverse. Nice color, looks original. One thing I have noticed is that NGC grades a bit harder than PCGS regarding the older cents. I picked up a VF35, same 09SVDB, and it looks like a mid xf40-5 PCGS cent.
