This is an update to a post made by Midas 1 year ago. A friend of mine and I were talking recently and we decided to contact Star Grading Service in an attempt to do a submission test to see exactly what they would tell us and we both believed the request would be turned down as we believe that in order to get coins graded by them you have to be part of their "FAMILY". However, we wanted to make sure that it wasn't due to the number of coins being submitted. I wrote them two different e-mail submissions using two different anonymous e-mail accounts one day apart with requests and WHOOAAAA did we get two different interesting responses. First we submitted a request to grade a 1964 Proof set and then we submitted a request to grade an unopened mint box of 10 - 20th Anniversary Silver Eagles. SGS responded almost immediately to both e-mails. Here's a copy of the e-mails and responses... ----- Original Message ----- From: To: <sgs@stargrading.org> Sent: Sunday, January 21, 2007 5:12 PM Subject: Sumbission > Hello, > > I have a 1964 Proof set of five coins in a capitol > coin holder. We have at least a 9-month waiting list currently and can put you on the list if you want. It takes a very long time to teach graders and we are going as fast as we can. If you want on the waiting list send us you address and we will put you on list. Thank you very much for asking for SGS services and I am sorry that we can not be of more help but SGS coins have more than exceeded our expectations. David from to sgs@stargrading.org date Jan 22, 2007 2:54 PM subject How to Submitt 20th Anniversary Coins? I am wanting to submit an unopened mint box of 10 sets of 20th Anniversary Silver Eagles for grading. There are a total of 30 coins for grading 10 Mint state, 10 Proof and 10 Reverse Proof coins. Please advise me on what I will need to do as your web site states I will need an authorization number before I can send in my coins. Thank you. from Star Grading Services - SGS <sgs@stargrading.org> to date Jan 23, 2007 6:20 AM subject Re: How to Submitt 20th Anniversary Coins? Dear Mr., Yes we can grade your Eagles and yes you do needa authorization number. Please ship and adequately insure coins. Ship to: SGS Star Grading Service 38 Church Street Belleville, Ohio 44813 On outside of box put: LLB012307MASTO Thanks for asking, Dave from SG Talk about BS coming from them! They are not taking any new clients and have a 9-month waiting list! But they will accept my Silver Eagle order post haste! We all know about SGS but I would never repeat never send anything to SGS because #1 of this obvious outright LIE! Next I'd be afraid of them telling me the item got lost in the mail. I did this experiment in order to see if it were really possible for people to actually send in items for grading due to the PNG grading survey that had questionable responses regarding "Customer Service & Products" listed on the survey. I know essentially of no one that has ever sent items into SGS but only of their obvious sellers whom I believe to be family and close friends. I seriously doubt very many true coin dealers have ever used them. I still don't understand how they can say they aren't taking any clients and have a 9 month waiting list, and the next day they are accepting submissions!
i have a funny feeling that you would get back 30 coins, but since it was unopened, you would not get back the 30 you sent...
I have a funny feeling they all have stacks of MS69 Silver Eagles (and others) and to save time, they just send you one from the stack. Laser etching a few and sending them to various places would be an interesting experiment in itself. Might prove to be interesting.
SGS - Talk about QUALITY! This story amuses me so much that I have to share mine. Here's a quote from my blog. This actually happened a few weeks ago and I've learned more since then. "I've been selling a lot on Overstock.com as of late. Noticed a seller by the name of abon (whom I believe is also on ebay) selling a ton of coins graded by SGS. What caught my eye was the volume of MS67 graded Morgan Dollars. This is a lofty grade even on common dates. I just looked up a 1921-S MS66 SGS slab being sold by abon that "has an estimated market value of $7850 to $8375 oi MS66 (Sources include Redbook, Greysheet, Coin Values etc.)" This coin was listed by abon out of Mansfield, Ohio while SGS is based in Bellville, Ohio. One heck of a coincidence but let's just call it that. Now the starting bid on this coin was 99 cents. So let's assume the coin is worth only $5000 and not the stated $7850 to $8375. Unless you are the biggest moron this planet has ever seen wouldn't you be selling that coin for a LOT more. To hell with the 99 cent starting bid. I want five grand if it's legit. Oh, if it's legit now doesn't that make you wonder? This is just one example but when I originally saw all of these SGS coins I went to the source. Type Star Grading Service into a Google search and see what pops up. The third one down mentions the word fraud. I decided to go directly to their web site first and ask some quesions. To make a long story short I inquired about currency grading (a new feature) and why they slab so many MS67 Morgans. I asked them if there was a chunk of the Binion hoard that no one else knew about. To my surprise I got a reponse it was the following: "Hi, I am Muslim and I say unto you I hope your CAMEL runs out of water!" Okay, but you still haven't answered my questions. No offense to anyone that may read this but does the Koran have a section on coin grading? Especially on coins from a country that didn't exist when it was written? Hmmmm, smoke that Camel and think about it." I don't think SGS likes me too much especially since my reply included that I hope your camel mates with a swine. Politically incorrect but WAY fun. No name listed on my reply and seriously doubt this person was Muslim and SINCERELY don't care. Perhaps it was Larry Bence the owner of ABON and SGS (conflict of interests here?). Anybody know his religious backround or care? Still wondering about the lost part of the Binion hoard though..... clembo
clembo: Nice reply to those idiots. I, also, hope that his camel mates with an unmentionable creature. Just a bunch of losers.
His biggest mistake is to join this forum and make a total fool of himself. The worst thing that one can ever do is not bother to read the rules - I got a great insult from him. Thank goodness, I didn't get any of SGS slabs and will never bother to.
