Just curious what the grade would be on this coin. Is the lack of a "U" in "United" from a weak strike. Thanks!
Au 53. Just by the photos I can't give a great assessment because those scratches on the obv could be from cleaning or damage. But I'd hate to say details unless I know for sure. I like the coin it has some luster, but I can't shake the feeling it may have been cleaned a while ago
Here are some new photos. Thanks for the help. It seems to have a nick right next to her nose but I'm not sure about cleaning. It may have had a light one at some point. I'm not an expert on gold which is why I'm soliciting some opinions. Seems to have enough meat on it for AU but again the striking is perhaps very poor on the left dentils and the U in united is almost gone.
i dont want to be the pessimist, but that is XF45 at best, no way it is AU....at worst it is harshly cleaned
I'm in agreement that the coin was harshly cleaned at some point, it also looks like Lady Liberty had a unfortunate nose job. Definitely not an AU coin it would very likely garner a details grade for the cleaning issue alone. It's appears to be the slanted 5 variety for the date as well. But overall it's one of the most common date Type 3 $1 gold coins. If it was my coin and I could possibly return it and find another one that isn't damaged that's the route I'd take personally.
My guess is the u is because of a greased filled die, at the same time it looks like a few well placed hits that look bad. I would also put it in the XF details range. Just my opinion and I am also no expert.
