I have decided to start a gold type set. What do you think of my start? I don't have many of the needed coins yet, but it does get a little pricy trying to assemble a set like this. image.jpg

That's a heck of a start! Most of mine grade out AU so you are doing well. Wait til you get the 20s. The weight will make it feel like you really got seething for your money

In short, I think it's a great start! Nice lookin' group of coins you have there. Although gold isn't my thing, I'd be interested to see how this set grows.

It's a sweet set! I love the $10 Indian! I have always wanted to do a gold set. It's a great set to find the parameters of your resources. LOL

Great recommendation . I was going to pull on a Type I liberty in AU-58 back when they were $700 , they're way over that probably 3 to 4 times now if not more . I still don't have one but it's on my short list for this years ANA convention , probably in 55 .

Nice set so far. I started the same thing about a year ago and have ten pieces all MS62's. It's a fun set to see come together.

Very nice I had one once but when the price of gold shot up it went

I don't have one either I kinda ignored the gold when they were cheaper I'd have no problem with a type one $20 even in 45-50 if it was a slightly worn and realatively mark free example I got a type one $5 this fall in au-50 and it's a nice coin

I feel on earler gold coins that au is the way to go there often far more eye appealing then a baggy ms 60-61 and half the price

You're right with just about any coin . I once bought a really well struck Trade dollar in 61 from Harlan Berks . It had everything including milk spots all over both sides . I really tried to like it and had it for over a month , finally I just took it back . That's why on Trades and other higher priced coins where I want quite a few of I'll shoot for AU but will go down lower if the coin is nice for the grade , and has eye appeal to me .

A gold type set seems so intimidating. I haven't even finished my regular type set. Maybe one day.....

I know what you mean , but the 18th and some of the 19th century coins are way up there too . So I treat the gold like the others . Wonder why I only have 5 US gold pieces though. lol

I'm slowly adding to my gold type set along with my regular ill never be able to do the early ones tho I'd love to someday get a couple of the most common early gold coins tho I tend to buy whatever strikes my eye rather then focusing exclusively on one series I'm easily distracted by a great coin regardless of what it is
