Higher grade examples of these (PR66-PR69) have gone up 40%-50% in the past year... I was going to buy one a while back and had notes from last March/April. This was also verified with a few guides.

I've only been collecting for 5 years or so, but this seems like a lot! Any reason(s) why?

i just started a thread about this like a week ago. a few educated collectors acknowledged the same thing, most likely due to the 50 year anniversary.

I wonder if those collectors would tell one to 'wait' a year or two to purchase that coin.

i am guilty of getting "caught in the hype" of buying a coin at its peak....i think getting these now is important before the mint releases this anniversary set and the peak is realized from others feeding the frenzy with the added publicity. just my opinion, worth about a 2 cent piece...

If I recall correctly, this is a relatively recently acknowledged variety so the market may not yet be fully mature or saturated.

The “Accented Hair” version of the Proof 1964 half dollar is nothing new among those that collect the series and I believe both PCGS and NGC have been acknowledging this on their labels for free over the past twenty years (well before their variety attribution programs).

Speculation or “educated guess” puts the population of “Accented Hair” to “Normal Hair” 1964 Proof half dollars at between 10 – 15 percent of the total population of 3.95 million sets produced that year. The “Accented Hair” version is notorious for having “milk spots” developed on the coins.
The “Accented Hair” version can still be cherry-picked by searching 1964 Proof Sets, value really isn’t an issue until the coin grades PR68CAM or higher and PR67DCAM or higher.

If you are interested in collecting the series and want to buy an “Accented Hair” 1964 Proof half dollar instead of finding one, go ahead. I doubt the price will be any cheaper or higher later on; the price might go up in the near term being that this is the fiftieth anniversary of the series but the price will fall back in a short period of time.

Bottom line is that this is a capitalistic society and “supply versus demand” rules (there are more “Accented Hair” Kennedy half dollars out there then there are collectors for them). Some people may be buying on speculation, we will see if they are still standing when the music stops.

I had thought that PCGS and NGC only started to recognize this variety within the last decade, but looking through some history I can see it was earlier than that. It's funny how one loses track of the additional years.

Finding “Accented Hair” Kennedy half dollars. Just to make the point, a local B&M shopped called the house today telling us that they had just purchased approximately 200 forty percent silver half dollars and a few ninety percent halves. My dad went up to look them over while out doing some errands. The B&M shop treats these coins as scrap and we buy for spot price.

Dad found four coins, two forty percent and two ninety percent silver for a grand total of $26.40. The four coins are:

1970-D Kennedy half, should grade MS65 with a possibility of MS66.

1966 DDO-004, Business Strike and should grade MS64.

    1964-D DDO-011, hoping for a MS66 grade.

    1964 (AH) DDO-015 (FS-103) which should grade PR66.

Moral of the story, if you have the time, check the junk silver bins at your local B&M shops.

I do not believe that the Accented Hair Variety is skyrocketing anymore than I believe that there will be a fever generated over the 50th Anniversary of the Kennedy Half Dollar Set as the US Mint has put exactly ZERO effort into really commemorating the event.

I mean seriously, a .999 fine Gold Kennedy that will carry the current flat and digitally enhanced cameo contrast with possibly a dual date? If anything at all, it will be just another piece of bullion followed with a whole new generation of scammers selling Gold Plated Kennedy's as Commemorative coins!

Perhaps the definition of beautiful has been redefined in "Bizarro" terms?

It will, to say the least, be interesting to see what kind of expensive packaging the US Mint actually comes up with to relieve folks of their dollars.

After looking at completed eBay sales, I must say I am a bit surprised at some of the closing prices.

For example, this listing makes absolutely no sense: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-P-JOHN...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

PR66 at best with no cameo.

    This one doesn't either: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-PROOF-...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Hey. Maybe I could get my $350 back on the PR67CAM coin I bought back in 2005?

Although this might be the cause...I'm not 100% sure this is the reason. It would make sense and it's nice to have something we can point at and say "that's why this is happening." But, I have seen the Kennedy Half series in the past experience seemingly random price jumps. It lasts for a while and then drops down. Perhaps the anniversary is the cause this time, but in the past...it sure seemed random.

I've been looking to acquire an Accented Hair for about a year. IMO, the prices and difficulty in finding one for sale, only occur when you add "Cameo" or "Ultra Cameo" to the requirement.

19Lyds, those prices don't make sense. I'll continue to be patient and wait for the right coin.

After reading the recent threads on here I enabled an Accented Hair Kennedy Search w/emails on eBay.

All I have to say is that there are tons of scammers and/or just outright ignorant sellers hawking coins as Accented Hair Kennedy's. I see "transitional" coins and even quite a few 1964 (both P & D) business strikes being sold as Accented Hair.

If you're looking for an Accented Hair Kennedy, be CERTAIN that you know how to identify the variety as not everything advertised as an Accented Hair is actually an Accented Hair.

    Be vewy, vewy careful folks.
