Here's another galley coin that just arrived today and one more to check off the ol' want list. I like the portrait, love the galley and the deep green patina, and am tickled by the fact that there's only one lonely oarsman on deck. Again, I'm using CNG's photo. I haven't been able to take one as good, and theirs just captures the coin in hand perfectly. Please post your Allectus coins! I know Steve has a really nice one with the same provenance from the 'C' mint. Simon Shipp really collected a boatload of these galley types, eh. BRITANNIC EMPIRE ALLECTUS Quinarius (2.9g, 20mm) Londinium (London) mint, 293 - 296 AD. RIC V 55; Rogiet 1017; Burnett, Coinage 111. O: IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust right. R: VIRTVS AVG, galley with mast rowing left, waves below; QL in ex. Ex Simon Shipp Collection
Very nice Z. In good condition, these don't come cheap nor are they easy to find. Here, once again, is my poor example of this coin: ALLECTUS Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust right REVERSE: VIRTVS AVG, galley rowing left, QC in ex. Struck at Camulodunum 293-6 AD 1.2g, 16mm RIC 128
Was this direct from Simon (Denant) or from auction Zumbly? I bought an uncleaned one the other day and I am cleaning it as we speak.....may take another week or so though.
YOC - I belive this one came from CNG. Simon appears to have consigned a large portion of his personal collection them. It is where I got my Hadrian denarius from his collection.
I would say he did have a collection just based on the enormous amount of galley coins he had. Even if they were technically 'for sale' he definitely was attracted to that type of reverse.
I will take your word for it since I have never met him. All I see is that on CNG there are ~205 coins, each with a galley or boat of some kind on them, with his name attached as provenance. I made an assumption based on that. I kind of wish he was a collector just because I find it entertaining that someone with the last name Shipp collects ship reverses. Edit: I should also add that I assumed because they list it as the Simon Shipp collection
Wow => that's a super example, Z-dawg!! (congrats on a fantastic pick-up!!) Ummm, I have a pretty sweet hombre myself ... Allectus. Romano-British Emperor, AE Quinarius “C” mint AD 293-296 Diameter: 19 mm Weight: 2.72 grams Obverse: Radiate and cuirassed bust right Reverse: Galley left, with mast; waves below; QC Reference: RIC V 124; Rogiet 1027; Burnett, Coinage 1027 Othere: 6h … black patina, minor deposits
What is the difference between a collection and dealer stock. I know more than one dealer that prices coins with no intention of selling but will if someone is willing to pay the price. In return this collector/dealer can set up at shows and be offered coins he might want by wholesalers and heirs to grandpa's collection. It is a different take on the hobby.
I see where you are coming from......I have seen such 'dealers' Simon moves his stock on fast........spoke to him last week, re.buying/selling.
Interesting. I would be surprised too if this wasn't his personal collection. As Whiz mentioned, CNG has been offering a huge number of his coins all with some type of ship on them. In any case, you may very well be right, but it's still amusing to me to have a nice ship coin from "the Simon Shipp collection".
