Silver Eagles, collect by date or forget it?

Does it make any sense to collect Eagles by dates or is it foolish.
    Thanks.
Example I have. 1986 BU coin. Is it worth what a coin dealer says, 100.00 or is it just Bullion.

Many here collect 'em by date, condition and manufacture.

$100 for an '86 seems a tad overpriced to me.

I wouldn’t want to pay more than $35.

I don't necessarily collect by date but at the beginning of the year when new coins come out I buy as many Silver Eagle Proofs, slabs and BUs that I can and then that's it for the rest of the year.
The mint only produces a certain number of coins and when they're gone the flipper's and dealer's prices are too high for me.

It's a personal preference. I only collect by year. For me there are just way too many issues in the set to try and keep up with.

The dealer has to make money, but as a bullion coin with low collector value,
who cares if it is BU? You can only sell it to another "collector" and then you are inside the pyramid scheme.
If you brought a BU 1986 to the dealer to sell, he will probably pay spot or a little more. So $100 is a gouge (IMO). He is selling those coins to "collectors"
who won't be selling those coins for many many years and won't find out they have been taken until it's too late.

Exactly why I quit with the last issue of the original variety. And why I quit with all new releases. I am celebrating 75 years of active collecting by turning off the US Mint. I placed my first order with the US Mint in 1959. No more.

I collect things, it's just what I do. It's a bad habit I inherited from both of my parents. Some of the things I previously collected were larger items that took up too much space so in late 2019 I started collecting silver coins.
In the 60s, 70s and 80s my Mom ordered sets and coins from the US Mint so that's where I started ordering from. But, as I mentioned earlier, I found other places to buy the things I like. What I like are 1 oz coins that are 99.9% silver such as ASEs, Swans, Maple Leafs, Libertads, etc.
I'm not concerned about how much they cost or what they will be worth someday. I just like collecting them.
