Thread #12 where I ask the fine members of CoinTalk their opinions on a coin I have already sent to CAC for review. Please let me know what you think, such as: Will it fail to CAC, and why? Will it be a green or gold CAC sticker? What (negative) issues does the coin have? What positive attributes does the coin have? Is the strike good or bad? Is the toning pretty or ugly? etc Up for consideration is a 1921 $1 Morgan Dollar NGC AU55 in modern NGC holder, submitted to NGC by yours truly. This was a coin my grandfather had, but he didn't collect coins. At some point in the 80's I decided it was my birth-right, and it spent the next 20 years in a cigar box. Don't hesitate to talk bad about it. I need to hear your thoughts! And people thought I was dumb to get it graded by NGC and now I've sent it to CAC too, LOL.
I understand why you sent it for sentimental reasons but as to cac I'm saying no got crusty black toning not real appealing and a real baggy coin is real hard to get a grade feel for grade just see a touch of high spot wear au 55 makes sense as I think this one got heavy bank bag wear but is just not visually appealing. Story is what makes it
Whether CAC will sticker it who knows, it's a 50-50 chance. I do like the earthiness of the patina but, I like both crusty and nicely toned Morgans just have to have some color on them. Like the old west dusty and gritty.
I added this coin at the last minute to the first batch I sent to CAC. I really thought this coin would most likely not pass, but it DID! I know the photos look really flat, but this coin does have a bit of luster left hiding under that (unattractive?) toning.
