I spotted this 1876-CC dime on eBay and it looks like a cast counterfeit. Is my gut feeling accurate? http://www.ebay.com/itm/CARSON-CITY...Seated-Silver-Dime-UNCIRCULATED-/371000326145 Opinions wanted.
My initial impression of this coin was it just didn't look right and the seller of this dime does state in his description it has been cleaned. It just looked to me like it has the characteristic rough surfaces of a cast coin.
Honesty. 1876- cc dime is not a rare date and he wants the money of a problem free example you can buy a nice graded au example for the price I'd walk away I believe it to be genuine but badly damaged and over cleaned
Detail is too good for a cast coin none of the flatness or softness in the detail you'd expect in a lower quality cast fake and the dentils are too well formed and designed and a better one they'd try to clean up the surfaces better. surfaces either from being dug then over cleaned or from being improperly cleaned with some kinda acid I think its real but hopelessly damaged
Rusted dies Looks to be a Fortin 108 Edit: I did not look at the DR measurements to confirm the 108 just the rust pattern so it may be a different die marriage. (I'm driving)
Jello, I think one should link to the web book as his site can be hard to navigate. http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/pictorial/1876cc.htm
Yes it can be KJ I just wanted to show if you read more you learn more.if you read the site 1st page it give you the other books and info need for all seated coinage eBay not a book or a learning tool.
I have been to Gerry's web site, all of it. I had an 1877 dime that I sent to him to photograph and document the shattered die reverse and it is now posted on his new discoveries page. He now owns it as part of a deal for a couple of coins I wanted for my type set. I bought an MS-62 dime, and a couple of AU seated quarters from him. A great guy.
As do I a Clashed 1840-O not graded yet just put back in the right slot in set. Was marked by Grandpa in book 1840-P for to many years.
