Hello everybody. Now I've seen this discussion on here before, but I can't find it anywhere so I'll ask again. The older Mint sets and the brown envelope they came in, did they come sealed from the Mint or we're they opened? Thanks!!
Okay thanks guys. So when I see the older proof sets for sale anywhere and they say "never been opened!," I can call BS on them.
Might be a sales gimic by a dealer to actually seal the thing himself. Would make it appear more valuable.
From what I know, it seems best to stay away from these. First, they were't opened to begin with. Second, these envelopes were fairly easy to forge. But in defense of a seller, it sounds like some people said the seals could close themselves over time so you could have someone who got this from a grandfather and didn't know any better.
mint & proof sets in "origional packaging" There are sellers on eBay and even a few coin supply houses that sell envelopes for any year proof set. As far as I can tell, they look like the originals. So beware! I believe someone could have a good business by buying up proof sets, checking them & submitting the better coins for certification, then re-sealing the rejected sets in these original looking envelopes to sell as "unopened" sets. This has been one of my biggest beefs with the coin business today. On any given day you can see almost any mint product box & COA for sale on eBay. How can you tell anymore if a set is really original? There are even places you can purchase the CSA boxes & COA's from the government issued Morgan dollars. Isn't this something we should consider just outright fraud?
