I have a 1956 Mexican centavo, it has little tags on the sides that are made of the same color metal as the coin, which I think is bronze. What's up?

Maybe a charm bracelet piece. I have seen bracelets, belts, coat cuffs made from articulated joined coins. Chinese use gold coins. I once appraised one for an elderly woman, the coins were US $2.5,5,10 gold before 1904. She said unfortunately she had a very small waist as a bride :)

I think that sounds right, I was thinking a ring or some other type of jewelery.

No i would agree most likely a bracelet between 1880s and about 1960 this was a very popular thing to do people would make bracelets of foreign coins !! sadly it always ruined the coin in your case not a big loses the coin wasn't worth much but when your talking rare gold coin to just rare low mintage foreign coins it sucks !!
