hi all, i picked this ptolemy coin up at a coin show a couple months ago, dealer listed as ptolemy vii with no further attribution. didn't think i'd be able to ID it considering the condition, so it's been one of my "desk pieces" since then. ....a coin i just leave on my desk so i can pick it up an play with it whenever i want. anyway, i thought i would give an ID a shot. based on the style of the obverse, the position of the wings/head of the eagle on the back, the off target hit, and the size...25 mm and thin, for the type at 8.1 g, i think it may be a ptolemy X coin like this one.. http://www.ancientimports.com/cgi-bin/lotinfo.pl?id=24261 also notice it has that little "dot" by the right wing that's visible. here's mine... any ideas?
Dats a sweet Ptolemy-pickup!! ... and man, they always look so "right" on that desk of yours ... Nice additon
ok , thanks all, i think i'll call it a ptolemy x ( or mabye "ptolemaic kings of egypt" with a big range of dates). if you guys don't have the link JA provided, bookwark it, it's great. that where i started for my attribution, didn't finsih there, but would have been lost without it probabl.
Chris, if you're really stuck, email the owner of that site, Daniel Wolf. He's very friendly and helpful. He helped me out with a couple of attributions.
