I just received a 1916 Mercury dime that I purchased on ebay. This photo is the one straight off the auction and then 2 pics of the coin I received. It was listed as a MS64 FSB with no mention of scratches. What would you grade this at?

I don't even think that's the same coin

I'm looking at the pic of the two obverses side by side and notice that the small rim nicks don't match up. I think they switched the coin on you

I notice a vertical line running top to bottom on the end of the wingtip on the headgear. This line is not present on the coin you received. Also, on the auction photo there seems like a small ding on the INSIDE of the rim near the E in Liberty. This is not on the coin you received. Also, there looks like a ding on the OUTSIDE of the rim near the B on the coin you got. On the auction photo, this feature is not present.

At least that's what i can tell from the pictures. Is the coin in a holder or do you have it raw??

IMO, there's no way that's the same coin.

I grade it MS details, scratched, net XF.

On the bright side, it does have a hammered strike.

    Hope it works out....Mike

I think so too. In all fairness the seller hasn't had a chance to respond yet since I only emailed him an hour ago, but I will post his response.

I have it raw. It shipped in a 2x2 but I removed it to get a good look and to put it in my Dansco. I have never seen a merc so obviously damaged before. The scratches look like they cleaned it with steel wool.

If not for the scratched, it would be a nice coin.

But it's definitely not the same coin...or even the original coin which someone scratched up before sending to you

Is that a small ding on the nexk just above the 1 in the date?

If so, i don't see that on the pic of the coin from the auction.

Yes there is a nick just above the 1 in the date.

Here is what the seller said:

"Hi John, I has several 1916's listed, but I have a Very Good system to be sure & send the right coin. None-the-less John, If you do not like the 1916 Dime, you can certainly return it for a full refund. Thanks-Dave"

Looks like I will get my money returned, but I would rather have the coin in the auction. Well I guess my quest will continue, fortunately it"s not a difficult one to find.

I'm absolutely certain that the coin you got is the same one shown in the auction photo.

What a shame the coin has been scratched. The object details on the obverse are beautifully struck. If you get stuck with this coin I would certainly love to release you of it's burden, scratches and all.

Sorry about the switch, it must really be disheartening.

It was disheartening when I took the loop to it, but the seller seems to be a decent guy and has offered to refund or replace so things are OK. He has another 1916 listed on ebay that has an identical reverse as the one I was sent and the obverse is scratchless, he is offering me that coin to make good on the deal.

Man that original coin was beautiful!
Too bad about the one that you got!

It is the same coin. However, the first photo was taken back in 1916, the seller saved the photo, carried the coin in his pocket, dropped it a few times, let his kids play with it and then sent it to you.
Who pays for the postage if you return that thing.

I'd demand the coin pictured. Unless he is one of those sellers that state "the coin pictured is similiar to the one you will receive."

I don't care how nice he seems, use a return receipt when sending it back so the recipient has to sign for it, that way they can't pull the old we never got the coin back scam

I got another email from the seller and he said that he looked over the photo I sent him and then looked at the other 1916 he just listed and is sure that he mixed up the coins. He is going to cancel the new auction and send me the coin I originally purchased that was in the photo I attached at the beginning of this thread. He also said that he is so embarrased by this that he is also going to send me a second BU merc at no charge. He also is going to cover my shipping cost to send the scratched one back (which I did send out with signature confirmation).

I think this guy is the real deal. He could have screwed me on this but hasn't. I have had mostly good luck with buying on Ebay. Thanks everyone for the quick replies on this, it helped me to know that I was not crazy or blind, well.... at least not blind.
