I am going to buy some air-tites to store a tube of 2014 ASE I just bought and was wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a good place to order from online. Hopefully, asking for this info is not against forum rules.
Not against the rules. Whatever you do, don't get the ones without the rings. They are the devil to remove coins from sometimes. JP's corner has them for 55c each. http://www.jpscorner.com/airtite-ring-type-coin-holders.html
how are the ones with rings internally any different than direct fit? they are all meant to be "hard to open", i believe that is the point, hard to get in, as in, air-tite.
The Direct fit air tites sometimes fit a little too tightly. Then if your coin is worn they are too loose. I had a mint BU wheat cent in a direct fit air tite. I went to remove it one day and it was stuck. It was stuck so bad I had to end up ruining it just to get it out.
He means the plastic part holding onto the coin with the direct fit can be very snug, not opening and closing them (which is the same on both kinds).
I only buy direct fits for standard size coins - never have had a problem with hundreds of them. I like them better because you can see the edge of the coin better than you can with the ring fits. I only use the ring fits for odd size coins. If a coin is placed properly in the Ait-Tite, there is practically no reason to ever open it, unless you enjoy wasting them. Yes, I did open a couple because I missed some lint inside and had no problem removing the coin. I know the claim is the ring is inert, but I swear I've had them react with the coin, either way, it's one more substance unnecessarily touching the coin. I've also had coins slide inside the holder, compressing the ring, making it look like hell. If memory serves, since the rings are too thick for thinner coins, I've had them "climb" over the rim of the coin. As long as they make direct fits, I'll never buy another ring fit for a standard size uncirculated coin.. But, if you like ring fits, buy what you like.
JP's Corner has an eBay store as well as their own web site. If all you're ordering is the 20 air-tites, you might check both places. From what I remember, pricing and shipping charges at the eBay store are structured in a way that can be much more friendly to very small orders.
JP's serms to have the best price if you are buying a small amount. I buy from them a lot. They have fast shipping too. If you are buying them in large quantities, like a box of 250, valleycoin has a slightly better price. I have bought a box of 250 direct fits for quarters, halves and cents. It seems like a lot of money at first, but you will probably go through airtites faster than you think and it ends up cheaper.
Thanks for all the advice! I just ordered about 80 of them from JP's and will probably place a larger order after I have a chance to try them out. I have a feeling I will like them and then I will need to decide how many of my coins I want to put in them. I have been buying rolls of BU coins from APMEX and I wonder if I should put them all in Air-Tites. I will also need to decide if it is better to put coins in these or leave them in their Intercept albums.
I wouldn't bother. I have old tubes of silver eagles, stored in original tubes, that still look great. Instead of buying plastic, buy more silver.
For modern coins, I only put the highest grades in Air-Tites. For ASE's that would be MS70's and maybe a few exceptional MS69's.
I just received my order and I was surprised that the foam rings do not come as rings. Mine came as foam discs that are perforated and that I have to punch out the center on all of them. Is this the way they are supposed to come? A bit annoying that I have to do this as I want to minimize touching the foam that the coin is going to be in contact with.
I tried taking the middle of the foam insert out and it came out very easily. I was worried that it would take a bit of manipulation to get it out but it popped out easily. So, on reconsideration it is not a big deal.
