NGC Cert Photos are Horrible

I realize the free NGC cert photos are just to help with coin verification, but it's almost like they intentionally try to take bad photos. I mean, they certify thousands of coins a week, your telling me they cant spring for a few lights and proper stand?

Here are the NGC photos of my coin:

    1976 $1 Obv Slab CAC Type 2 ngc.jpg

    1976 $1 Rev Slab CAC Type 2 ngc.jpg

Those are way worse than the seller photos:

    1976 $1 Obv Slab CAC Type 2 seller.jpg

    1976 $1 Rev Slab CAC Type 2 seller.jpg

    Here are my photos:

They look more like scans than photos.

    Still horrible.

When someone pays for NGC photos, do they show up on their cert verify tool like the PCGS TruViews?

I have looked up thousands of NGC coins and never some across a nice one, so I am thinking not.

Actually, I don't think I've ever seen a member post one of the NGC pro photos of their own coin, but surely they exist. I'd be curious to see one.

Ngc photos are freely done by ngc, unless I'm mistaken. It's sole purpose if for verification and no care is taken in the quality.

I wonder if maybe NGC conceals the professional photo so if someone buys a slabbed coin , and then decides to sell it, they don't have a professional photo to go by.

I don't know. I never liked NGC, I keep all my slabs one flavor. NGC slabs are harder to photograph and I've seen a lot of coins that have rotated due to improper holder size.

I have often thought the same thing about NGC photos. Occasionally, if I'm interested in a coin where the seller has either posted a poor photo, or one I think has been overly enhanced, I'll look at NGC's photo. On most, but especially with BN copper, the NGC photo is the poorest of the bunch. Some are so bad that it's hard to make out any unique details (generally on lower graded coins). I suppose it does provide balance to the overly enhanced pictures some people try to pass off as natural.

Tim, this is one time that I must take issue with your statements. You're too young and haven't been around the numismatic circuits long enough to make a carte blanche statement like that. I've owned dozens of PCGS slabs in which the coins were rotated, and I currently own just one medal (Wyoming/William Cody) that was rotated a few degrees, but it was due to misplacement. A few sharp raps on a table along the edge, and it was correctly aligned.

Also, I've never had a problem taking photos of NGC slabs, and I am, by no means, the best photographer. If you're having difficulty with your photos, then you might want to re-examine your photo equipment, lighting and set-up.

NGC's photos are merely for cert verification. That's all!

Is that a die clash under the UN in UNITED? Neat!

Even though it is free...it is done for a purpose. It's there to help a buyer determine if the coin they are buying is infact the coin that was graded...not a fake. This is a service that could make NGC slabs more desirable...yet they are not really putting an effort into it. It's unfortunate.

The photos are so bad you can't even see the CAC sticker...I mean, come on! ;):Do_O

    Ha! Ha!

    NEWS FLASH!!

"NGC has just bought CAC so they can put the Green Beanies on themselves. According to the official press release, they said it would save lots of time."

I think I have seen more coins rotated in PCGS holders than NGC holders...especially the older holders.

I'm glad you enjoy my little fun there. All joking aside though...I really do think this could be a very valuable feature that might make NGC even more popular if it was executed better.

100% agree, hence my OP. They could have way better photos, without cannibalizing their full-rez paid photo service. I mean, that Ike photo I posted it basically worthless, they might as well have drawn a crude picture of my coin for all the help it would be with verification.

I agree. Imagine what would happen if they started taking useful photos of every coin they graded and posted it online. That would all but destroy those who are counterfeiting their slabs. Any slabbed coin after that date could easily be looked up prior to purchase and image verified. That might actually make them the preferred choice over PCGS because of the security it would provide...of course PCGS would probably soon do the same thing.
