They only melt unsold numismatic collector items, not coins minted for circulation.

Ummm, no. Read your Red Book Mike. The only coins the Fed has, ever has, are the coins that have been issued for circulation.

They minted over 21 million of the 2001-P Kennedy halves, and they were not, repeat not, issued for circulation. That means they are still sitting in the mint's vaults.

The Fed has not ordered any half dollars from the mint since 2001, until now. That's why there have been no half dollars minted for circulation since 2001, again read your Red Book.

Now, if those coins have been sitting there in the mint's vaults all these years just gathering dust, along with all of the dollar coins they minted that the Fed has not ordered either, then it is entirely possible and maybe even likely that the folks at the mint just went ahead and minted the 2013 halves because the 2001 coins were forgotten about or over-looked when this unexpected order from the Fed for 6 million halves came in. In other words, somebody at the mint screwed up by going ahead and minting the 2013 coins.

But wait a minute, govt. employees wouldn't make a mistake now would they ???? No, never happen

LOL – I was waiting for that. Did they not announce through numismatic publications back in 2002 that the only way to get Halves was by ordering them at a premium from the mint?

You can’t have it both ways, here’s your own quote from another thread, “The Kennedy Half Dollars have been made for collectors only in rolls for years, yet they include them in the Mint Sets every year.”

Yes, as is typical of the mint, they attempt to profit from collectors by implying one thing, and doing another. Like I said, no integrity left at the mint.

LOL, and as is typical, their statement to the press, blames another, the Fed, for the mistake.

Yeah, that would be my point. Through statements to the press and the past 12 years of precedent, they made them numismatic collector items only (even Mike says so). If they were going to change this, they should have announced they were going to make them this year for circulatlation, rather that let collectors believe only 1.7M of each P&D were made, then flood the market at the end of the year.

Yeah, but not the 6 million they minted based on the Fed order. Those specific coins were minted for circulation.

So, aside from the 2013 Kennedy issue, has anyone heard anything about the 2012 Native American Dollars? Kinda the opposite happened with them. They’re supposed to be collector only issues, early in the year the mint posted they made around 6M, yet they said they were sold out after selling only around 3.4M, Did the remainder go to the Fed too, so they’re not actually collector only issues?

Pretty sure we've established nobody knows. But by this time next year - you'll know.

On a lighter note, the mint just posted that the 2013 Silver Proof Set has sold out with last reported sales of 419,148, which will change slightly (unless the Fed ordered some - just kidding, I hope). This will make the 2013 the 2nd lowest mintage, just slightly behind the 2012 set at 395,443 sold.

  12. This should increase demand and price on the 2012 silver proof set. TC

    And hopefully the 2013 set.

The first 2014 circulating coin production figures have been posted. Of particular interest are the numbers for the Native American Dollars. The mint says they have made 5.6M D's and 3.08M P's, even though they have only been selling less than 2M of each per year. I know Native American Dollar mintage is supposed to be 20% of the dollars made for the year, but in recent years the mint has not done so, because they don't sell. So, what is the mint doing this year, attempting to "cook" the books by increasing their seigniorage profit?

You have to wonder if our Congress is able to do anything if they can't kill the SAC dollar. Have we ever had two different types of coins for any denomination in the past? Was there a Kennedy and Franklin Half in the same year? It seems odd that you have the PRES and SAC dollars when no one is using either. Why don't we add a VP dollar to the list.

Very true, so the mint supposedly stopped making these for circulation and they were to be sold only to collectors. So, why are they making more than is needed to fill this demand?

Sadly, I'm buying the SAC and PRES dollars. I'm a sucker for this stuff.

Yeah, me too, one roll of each. But, I did buy some extra 2013 Sacs - they're tied with 2008 for the lowest mintage.

In fact, in the early 20th century, the commemorative Half Dollars circulated along side of the Walking Liberty type. I think that this is a perfect parallel with the Presidential Dollars as the Commemoratives.

You might be right but I thought that the Walkers were actually being used in the 10's, 20's, and 30's. Furthermore, the mint had the courtesy of calling the commemoratives "commemoraties" in the roaring twenties. I rarely see the SAC or the PRES dollars used by the average Joe but they're still pressing them at the mint. In addition, they're also creating other coins called eagles that are part of the "dollar coin set". We may want to kill one of them and I'll vote for the SAC's.
