ok...at the risk of sounding incredibly foolish.....as i was surfing the net, i cane across a coin club site which appeared to be fairly prestigious(not sure if i am allowed to list name). they were insisting a member was in possession of a genuine 1933 washington quarter. is this all rumor? there could possibly be 1895 circ stike morgans or the 1964 d peace dollar...could one of these exist ? i had never heard of it prior to this...thank you all.....steve

I collect washington quarters and have quite a few books on them. Each book has stated that no quarters (as well as other denominations) were minted for 1933 due to a combination of surplus quarters from 1932 and The Great Depression.

Could it have happened? I have no idea. I wasn't alive then and present in the mint so who knows what would happen off the record.

The 1964 Peace Dollar i have read was minted, but all were destroyed. Of course a mint employee could have snuck one out. It's happened before with other coins such as the Aluminum cents of the early 70's. Couldn't say for sure if it did happen because anyone bringing such a coin to light would have it confiscated and be arrested.

it was the beverly hills coin club. in a book i had read (by david bowers, i bellieve), the peace dollar was actually minted and some of the denver employees could buy it. they then requested all be returned. all are believe to have been retuened, but as no sales records were kept...there could actually be one out there. probably could have happened w/ 1895 morgan as well since they were minted. i had never heard of 1933 quarters being produced prior to this. of course the mint is known for a few shenanigans in earlier years. even tho i don't collect quarters at this time, i find it fascinating!...

Maybe what he ment was he had a 1932 Quarter that was minted in 1933. Or he had a 1934 quarter minted in 1933. Or he has a 1938 quarter with part of the 8 deleted. Anything is possible. There are reports of the 43 Lincoln Copper, 42 Lincoln Steel, 59 Lincoln wheat back so why not a 33 Washington. Wonder what would happen if someone just made one for the fun of it. Myself, I'd like to have a 1931 Washington Quarter. :secret: and never mention it though.

they had mentioned a few odd coins...also stating that 1 59 wheat cent had been authenticated by a federal marshall and that 5 quarters had been found authenticated by 3 professional numismatists...of course no names were given ...i've been out of the hobby for a few years. i didn't know if some discoveries had come to light since i had been away. at this stage, all seem to be bigfoot sightings....

What I don't understand is why does a Coin Club boast about what coins another member owns??? If i owned a rare and possibly controversial coin, i wouldn't want friends or club members telling other people about it

I read that 12,000 1895 Morgans were minted, and no one really knows what happenned to them.

I haven't been a member of that club for years. Too poor for me. You would think they would have taken down bragging about me by now.

my understanding is that they were doing research for a book and that some of these rarities existed. it IS possible that a 1964d peace dollar could be out there as well as the 1895 morgan. these coins were actually minted, but theoretically destroyed. we haven't seen one but who knows? i had just never heard that 1933 quarter dies had been prepared for production nor had any been struck. i find it quite interesting. who knew that someone would be sitting on 10...TEN... 1933 double eagles?? we knew they were actually struck...could be another hidden somewhere? got to admit that the discovery would be cool. the 59 wheat certainly could have been minted even by mismatched dies so that is possible. the monetization and legal status would be questionable, but possession of those may not fall into the same category as the double eagles. the wheat cent could actually fall under an error classification. i have no idea if any of the stories are true..i have never seen the coins. guess i'll keep searching junk boxes for the elusive 1895 morgan for my series. if i find the quarter tho, i'll give you guys first shot at buying it!!! i really do appreciate all of the members viewpoints and info in all these discussions. i had forgotten how much fun i had studying and talking about coins. the internet wasn't around when i was collecting before. talking with all of you certainly is a bonus to the enjoyment of the hobby!
