Smoothing Coins? How to?

Coins need something like a carfax report. It could be called....wait for it....coinfax!

Too bad there's no unique identification number.

You can crack them out, and "doctor" them.

 

I have papers up to 6000 grit I use for sharpening my tools they put a proof like mirror polish on the tool steel of my planes and chisels could be an idea look under lapping papers on a woodworking tool or sharpening stone sight never thought of using them on coins tho

 

see, i am beginning to think you reacted like that because it hit a nerve. there is no judgement in what i wrote in those paragraphs, it is a description of those types of practices and where they fall on the morality scale. i specifically said "if you". i specifically said "if you disclose"....the fact that even after tip toeing around, and adding the "not judging" caveat you were left with what you think others interpretation of you is. and being that we are discussing immoral practices, it isnt positive, so your kneejerk reaction is to get defensive.

let me further try to calm you down with a story. i am firmly against altering in any way, even acceptable methods. i received a walking liberty half in a silver keychain as a gift from a fellow numismatist. it was in great condition. i say "was" because now it is damaged forever (ie, on the rim from its holder, and from banging around in my pocket for 2 years). now, since this coin is already IRREPARABLY damaged, it is the only, and i mean, ONLY coin i have cleaned. its never coming out of that keychain ring (soldered shut) and is not part of my "collection". so i polish it with silver polish from time to time to take the tarnish off specifically so that it is freakishly shiny and becomes a conversation piece amongst numismatic strangers. (another story for another thread, ie, the cashier at Publix, the teller at BB&T, etc) kinda like the Semper Fi tattoo amongst marines. thats how i like to think of it at least. but i still cringe occasionally when i see a piece of numismatic history forever to be branded as "DETAILS".

so now with that said...take a deep breath. i know the part that really bothered you was "if i was someone who has purchased from you i would be concerned". you need to just accept that that is a common reaction humans will have. again, do not take offense to this. but regardless of whether it was you, or even one of the mods who said it, the very ones sent to protect and guide us on this forum, if someone, anyone said they cleaned coins, altered coins, etc, even if they said they would fully disclose it, i cant KNOWINGLY buy from them. too much risk. who knows what a person will do if they need money one day. again, even if not intentional. what if they mixed up their cleaned coin with an uncleaned one, just simple human error. my collection contains no cleaned coins. i loupe every raw purchase. and if a graded piece slipped through NGCs eyes, i have protection.

 

On a second note is there anyone that can professionally restore a coin I have an 1800 dollar in vf+ that some moron tried to change the last digit into a 4 it looks like crap and I know it would grade as tooled but I paid $100 about 15 years ago for what otherwise is a nice coin and would like to get the date restored to its proper appearance to me this is no different then plugging a holed coin just wondering if anyone knows who can do it and do a professional job

 

No nerves hit, and im not being defensive. I just want to find a tool that can do it. Mainebill finally gave a decent suggestion. Im not concerned with what others think.
