Ancient: Maurice Tiberius Follis

I do note that there are Maurice coins with TIB followed by Mau but I failed to find one with TIB followed by CON that was not given to Tiberius Constantine. Also, any coin with complete gibberish seems to be Maurice.

I ran across this Maurice with DN TIBER AVR PP AV making the point that anything goes. I regret missing this in the sale since I would have paid more than the $55. The reverse is half brockage and half normal. That is hard to do and the sort of weird coin I like.

 

Those error coins are awesome. I don't own any at present.

An update for steve-meister's follow:

I checked the specialized reference for this period, Money of the Incipient Byzantine Empire. The authors assign this issue to Maurice Tiberius. I'll go through the text later, ifI get the chance.

 

That leaves us with the question of how to tell coins that read TIB CONST like 95Ab2 from coins actually issued by Tiberius Constantine.

...and it leaves me wondering about the current status of my coins I have labeled as Tiberius Constantine and how you can tell what a Tiberius Constantine should look like.

Sear Byzantine says that coins reading TIB CONST with a trefoil top to the crown belong to Maurice while those with a cross belong to Tiberius Constantine. That means Steve's ID was correct and I was wrong to have brought it up. Learn something every day.

By the way, I just want to recommend Money of the Incipient Byzantine Empire to anyone with a deeper interest in Byzantine coinage. They cover many types that are unlisted elsewhere and generally provide more detailed dating information with evidence to back it. As of now, it covers from Anastasius I to the Revolt of the Heraclii, but I believe there are plans to continue it through the Heraclean dynasty
