Is it wise to get on the list with the USA Mint to buy Eagles as they come out? If so what Eagles should I buy? Thanks for your time K
What is your motivation to buying them? I think that typically, they don't go down in price on the secondary market unless gold drops...and there is no way to predict that. If gold goes up, then they will be more expensive on the secondary market later. Typically, new Eagles don't have much of a premium on the secondary market when they are new. It's down the road if the mintage is really low that happens...but that's only if the mintage is really low. So, bottom line is...there is no way to know. I think buying from the mint is the safest move...but it's up to you.

Hello and thank you for your reply. I am buying to leave for my son. So they won't be sold anytime soon. I don't know if I should buy just the Eagles or the sets or certain grades such as proofs. The plan is hold long term but be able to sell without a big hit if something happens and I need to raise cash. Like this set they have for sale now. 2014 United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set (PE4) now available
Agreed...I don't see the clad coins being of much value long term...and they are going to be common. If you are on a budget and want to still buy something nice. American Silver Eagles. They are around $60 or so from the mint and they are a wonderful coin made out of 1oz of .999 fine silver.
At one time, I had more than a dozen subscriptions registered with the US Mint. There wasn't any discount at that time, but it made it easier by keeping me from overlooking a particular item. At that time, the biggest advantage to subscriptions was that you were at or near the very top of the distribution list when new items were released. It was also convenient because you could go on vacation or out of town and not have to worry about them. Chris
i agree, buying for long term or to have for emergency, stick with the silver products, silver eagles, silver proof sets, these will hold their value whereas clad coinage will not...
United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set – 2014 discount subscription price is $28.75 per unit. So this is a CLAD yes?
No, a clad coin is what you'd get in your change. Flip it on its side and see how it's made of different metals? This set is a silver set so the coins are silver just like the American silver eagle coins you looked at.
No. If it says silver in the name, it contains at least some silver coins. I would go with American Silver Eagles either proof or uncirculated. You can even place some in your IRA/401K.
One more thing to think about Lyfsfun. If you are buying these issues to salt them away for possible future gain I'd add a word of caution. Anything you buy from the mint can sometimes be had for a lesser price on the secondary market. Proof Eagles, silver mint sets and commemoritve silver dollars many times wind up in dealer inventory for less than what was originally paid for at the mint. Tread easy my friend and welcome to the forum........
Agreed...it's rare that a modern mint product ends of being worth a lot more than the original issue, especially in the short term. Even more rare is being able to correctly pick which item it's going to be in advance. Every once in a while one pops up, but it's unusual (the last one I can think of is the 25th Anniversary ASE Set).
Yup, I got one from the mint. I think it was a pretty easy one to predict because of what happened with the 20th Anniversary Set.
I got in on that one too. My only regret is at the time I didn't have the Monongahela's to buy more........
