Hi guys, was just digging up some of my old Romans that I haven't really yet dated/identified and came across this one that has a really nice patina (photo's don't show it as I've changed the brightness/contrast for the detail to be easier seen). It's overall details aren't the best but I'd really like to know exactly what it is. I think it might be a Julian II Spes Reipvblicae? It has the emperor standing to the left holding globe & spear (sorry that picture isn't great) and the coin is around 15.5- 16mm. Would love to have an experts opinion on it as I'm not too great at identifying Romans Thanks,
I don't recognize the image, but then again I'm no expert. Can you make out the legends on either side?
On the left of the obverse, the first two letters are DN. That is followed either by IVLIANVS or by CONSTANTIVS but your photo is too dark to see. If not Julian, it is Constantius Gallus as the two were the only ones that issued the type. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/dd04.html
It was really hard to get good pictures with my phone, and it could do with some more soaking to try and get the letters more legible. Thanks a lot dougsmit, I'll do some more digging and I'm sure i'll get a certain identification
