    Hello All.

I'm just looking to see what the cointalk community thinks about the accuracy of the NGC price guide on their site....specifically the world coins.

I like to compare ebay asking prices to NGC, and am just curious as to how accurately the members of cointalk feel NGC represents the actual monetary value of a coin.

    Thanks in advance!

I collect South African and Latin American coins and the guide is good to identify differences in prices among types and years for example, but in most cases the > MS grades prices are not at all accurate.

From what I recall, if you look at the World Coins prices, they say they get them from Numismaster or something like that. To me, the coins look typical of those found in annual guides, which means they're extremely overpriced retail (on stock that tends to sit and not sell) and extremely underpriced on the truly rare items.

There is no price guide anywhere, by anybody, that is accurate. Every single coin there is has a value range, not a set value. And the only way there is to determine the correct value range is by using realized auction prices. And that does not include those found on ebay because the ones found on ebay are no good.
