I'd like to pick up a she-wolf roman coin. I know absolutely nothing about world/ancient coinage. Nothing. I've just finish my type set and as I historian I think it'd just be nice to have more historic examples I'm not looking for anything amazing, just something that has OK detail so you at least know what it is. What should I expect to pay, where should I look, any recommendations/thoughts? Thanks.

You can pick up a decent URBS for 30-40$.......all depends on the quality you are after really.
some mints are more expensive than others, with Trier and some eastern mints seeming to fetch lower prices than Arles, Lyon and Rome, but a decent Trier will be more expensive than a poor Arles....swings and roundabouts.
If you let me know your budget, I can sell you one...I have a few hundred 'wolf and twins'
    PM me if you like?

Doing a search on vCoins turned up many options from $23 and up. Be careful to include postage charges when comparing. This same search will show other options than the late Roman but they generally cost more. As a historian, you might like one that shows the shepherd finding the twins, or a silver coin of Domitian with the twins reverse. You will be amazed at the price differences shown in this group. Some dealers sell $50 coins for $500 - or at least they try. As with all coins, price follows condition and demand for the type.

I'd also suggest attending a large coin show like FUN in Florida (July) and seeing what ancients show up. It is always nice to see things in person. That is especially true when you are not good at visualizing sizes from photos. Perhaps you go to shows anyway???

I've actually never been to a major show. I plan to though, hopefully this summer after I finish undergrad. I'm in Florida so the ones that pop up in either atlanta or orlando would be easy, it's just finding the time/motivation to actually do so.

I wonder....is there a means to search for sold listings on Vcoins, for a search term or results, rather than just for each seller?
I have seen the URBS on Vcoins, some poor some very nice, some cheap and some overpriced........One very nice Chi rho example for not many bucks!
Postage from me to the US is about 5$ if you take the standard air mail risk and about 10 if its signed for. Not sure what Vcoins sellers charge or whether its included in their prices?

A seller on vcoins can set his own shipping options and costs. You have to select a shipping option at check-out and it gets added to your total before you're redirected to Paypal. On purchases from US dealers, I choose First Class with tracking, the cheapest rate. On small purchases from overseas, I also choose the cheapest rate, but on more expensive items, I ask for International Registered Mail, which can get pricey. But I figure $15 isn't bad for insuring that a $200 - $400 coin actual ends up in my mailbox.
