This information is quite accurate. There is one company (TPG) that uses the term First Strike and yes they know that there is no way to prove what they say is true. They are in this to make money. And in my opinion they are NOT the last word in giving the most accurate grade of a coin. "Buy the coin not the slab". Some of the wisest words I've heard here at CoinTalk concerning slabbed coins. Even if you win the rat race your still a rat.
Now, there is one seller who really cares! He really labored over that essay, and I congratulate him! Thanks for the reference.
Good Thread. Last year on the infamous and defunct show hosted by Robert Chambers on the Scripps shopping network "Coin Vault", They bragged about how they had "FIRST STRIKE" 2006 Silver Eagles that were minted in AUGUST 2005. First Strike MEANS NOTHING. I believe both NGC and PCGS would certify any Silver eagle as "FIRST STRIKE" if it was shown as "DELIVERED" before Jan 31st of the mintage year. Hmmmmmm, seems the 2006 Silver Eagle "FIRST STRIKES" were minted for at least 5 months during the year 2005, plus the whole month of January 2006. What a lotta hype and crap about first strike. First Strike for 6 MONTHS????? ????????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????????? As an aside to those of you who know that dies for striking coins are are replaced by NEW DIES all during the life of that coin, you can have a coin minted during Jan, April , July, or November that is a "FIRST STRIKE" off of that die which is as perfect as the First Strike Minted in August of the year before. I REALLY REALLY can`t believe that any SEMI-Educated coin person would buy into the first strike nonsense.
As another aside, we Morgan Dollar collectors know a "FIRST STRIKE" as to whether it is a DMPL (deep mirror proof like), PL (proof-like) or various semi-proof like and MS progressions of the same coin. VAM collectors will will pay insane prices for for a better die state where there are only 50-100 coins known overall.
I read the essay on the eBay listing. Other than it being in ALL CAPS which makes it harder to read, I think this seller would be an exception to my "ignore too long listings" policy. I may be committing a blasphemy here, but I saw one of the Reverse Proof ASEs and you know, I just wasn't overwhelmed. Maybe it wasn't a First Strike, though :goofer:
They don't. What they do buy into however is the fast sales and outrageous prices they see the uneducated laying out for these. So they buy into the profit motive just like they always do. Show 'em another way to take advantage of the uneducated - and they'll do that too.
