So, this is not mine, but I wish it was. Some guy has a California Gold 1854 Kellogg $20 NGC SP69 up for $2 Mil. He has 0, I repeat 0 feedback. Click here to see the auction] I wonder how much this coin would be worth if it was in a PCGS holder. No, really, how much is the coin worth? Regards, - Hal
Knowing absolutely nothing about California Territorial Gold except what I can read in the Red Book, I feel very confident in stating that this coin in its NGC slab is worth exactly what it would be raw, or in a PCGS, ANACS, or ICG slab. Anyone buying this level of coin is relying upon their own judgment, or that of an extremely trusted advisor, and not on the opinion of an anonymous employee of a TPG, even one of the big four. In this case the zero feedback doesn't concern me a bit. This is a well known, reputable dealer in high end material embarking on its first voyage on the Bay of EEEEE, with no expectation whatsoever of making a sale. The listing fee is being charged to their advertising budget because they expect (probably with some justification) that the media will pick up on the sale and give them a lot of exposure. My 2003 Red Book values the coin at $11,000 Unc. (i.e. at MS60). Any coin is worth what someone will pay for it, and there is someone out there willing and able to pay a lot of bucks for an SP69 example of a coin valued in five figures at MS60. If Bill Gates and Warren Buffet both decide to go after it, the sky is literally the limit. This is essentially one-of-a-kind, ownership of which will give someone both huge bragging rights, and an armed guard to stand next to it while on display at a major coin show.
I know the owners of this coin, and have personally seen it. It is by far the finest known example and will bring this price easily. Maybe not on Ebay, but someone will pay for it. They are one of the largest wholesalers in the country. Very surprised at their involvement with Ebay though.
Thanks for the perspective. BTW, the holder comment was just a joke. I found a similar coin on Ebay for $11,000. here. I would love to hold up these two coins next to each other and see what an additional $1,989,000 will get you. Of course, I will never get close to either. Best Regards, - Hal
it is a wonderfull coin indeed, just read about it they say the best preserved gold coin of the pre civil war?.That seriously makes it a rarity. i could see that coin actually being a good investment if you bought it and held onto it for 20 years my next question is who wants to loan me 2 million usd
if your a billionaire like gates you could buy up all the greatest coins on the planet without so much as a worry. The rothchilds did just that and lot of there coins have never been sold yet but sit in there personal collections and most of the world has forgotton they even existed.
Is this a great forum or what.Someone brings up a rare and interesting item and not only do our moderators know all about it but one of them has actually seen it!!!!. I am so glad I found this site. Thank you for that Jody. Bill
As a quick aside, it's interesting how this stuff is usually called California "Territorial Gold," even though most of was minted AFTER California became a state in 1850.
