Where can I get penny rolls pre-1959?

I went to the bank and asked for penny rolls pre-1959 and they said they don't have any so I asked for 20 penny rolls and said it didn't matter what date... I came home, opened them all and they were all 2013 pennies. So where can I get them? The cheaper the better.

EBay would be the easiest place, you can't expect to go to the bank and get rolls of wheats for face. The bank gets what it gets, they can't order certain dates, mintmarks, etc.

From a coin dealer, fellow collector, eBay, etc. Expect to pay from 31/2 to 4 cents each minimum for late date random dates/mm. Occasionally you might find one in a bank roll, but not often. Do not fall for rolls with special end coins showing such as an indian head, as they are just come ons.

If you want Wheaties, you have two choices:

    1) Buy them from dealers, at coin shows or take a chance on SleazeBay.

    2) If you want them cheap, go to the grocery store.

You went to a bank and asked for pre 1959 penny rolls? Why didn't I think of that?

DesertGem, Do coin dealers have like stores or something? How would I find a coin dealer? Sorry I'm new to this.

If I knew I could just ask for wheats that would have saved me sooooooo much time searching. :) Unfortunately the last time you could go to the bank and ask for pre-59 cents was in 1958.

I think your best bet would be to go to the bank and ask for rolls. That will be the cheapest way to find wheats. Plus you get the added bonus of possibly finding errors or varieties or foreign stuff too. Unfortunately you do get skunks sometimes and end up with sold new rolls. -- That has happened to me many times.

Well I guess I'll just take all the pennies I find and search for wheats, errors, and possibly rare ones :) Thanks for all the advice.

If you don't want to pay the premium associated over face. Then I would highly encourage you to coin roll hunt for the wheaties. Consider that every $25 bank box will yield anywhere from 10-15 wheats per box. If you're on a budget and you want to get that initial high, then this is definitely the way to go.

kookoox10 are you sure they wont have all 2013 pennies? Just like I got all 2013 pennies in 20 rolls...

There used to be coin stores/ hobby shops in most areas, but now mainly in larger cities. Google can help. Also with just 2 more posts, you can put aa "wanted" ad in the lassified forums ( read the special stickies for the rules on posting). Sometimes people post for sale ads also. Since they are heavy, best to find a cash and carry or figure on flat rate box.

I've searched almost $7k in cents and have gotten about $500 in solid 2012 or 2013's. That's just part of the game.

Yup, that's the nature of the beast. I've come across solid boxes of 2012's and 13's. Just turned around and deposited them into my dump banks. No big dealie!

Dump banks? Do you have certain banks where you drop off all the coins you don't want? What I do is just drop the coins off at the same bank I get them... Should I not do that?

I have one credit union that I get all my boxes of coins from. I used to dump them right back into their coin machine and luckily still got good results. I started feeling bad though, picking up 8 boxes of cents and 4 boxes of nickels each week and dumping them back on them again, so I opened up an account with another credit union that has coin machines at all their branches. I now spread my dumps out across several of their branches. It also helps reduce the chance of getting the same coins again.

Not unless you want to search the coins you already took back.

All the bank of america's I've been to don't have coin machines... Does credit union charge a fee (like coinstar) when returning coins? I just go to dollar tree and buy empty rolls for coins and bring them to the bank because of coinstar fee's. 9% is to high to dump coins into a machine.

Both my credit unions have machines that are free for members. One of them charges 7% for non-members to use and the other one is not usable by non-members since it deposits directly to your account.
I would look into credit unions in your area.
